I need a scope for a Cooper Varminter in .204 Ruger. Does this one seem appropriate for gophers?

When my new Cooper Phoenix Model 54 arrives,I will most likely be mounting a Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44.The magnification range allows for better field of view at lower magnification than the vx3,and more magnification at the top end. Most importantly to me,the eye relief is almost constant throughout the magnification range, unlike the vx3.

Should work just fine, I have a VXIII 4.5-14x40 BC on my 204, wish it had the varmint reticle but wasn't available at the time. My 223 wears a VXL 6.5-20x56 with the VR, find that it is a bit to much magnification when they pop up at 20 yds or less. You might want to consider the Long Range version with the side focus, I won't buy another scope without it.

the VX lll is the ideal scope for that rifle, friend uses one on a Tikka t3 and nothing is safe out to 350 yards. Of course Swarovski better if you want to spend the $$, quite a bit better actually. That may very well become your favorite rifle so do put great glass on it, and in great rings.

I'm running the VX-3 4.5x14 on my Model 7 Predator in .204,for coyotes on smaller farms where I don't want to use the .22-250AI. Mur

Would you get a ballistic reticle?

I would go with at least a 6-24X power. Gophers are small targets and with a .204 you are going to be able to take them a long ways out there. I use a 6-18X on my .22LR, and max distance is around 140 yards.

Sightron make some nice scopes. I use a 6-24X SII Big Sky on my 6BR. Peter Dobson at Hirsch Precision can get them for you.
