I just thought I'd ask for any knowledge you guys want to share re: scoping my 870. I've currently got a 20" rifle sighted smooth bore that I have used with 000 buck in areas banning single projectiles (Vancouver Island, BC). I would like to use my gun with rifled slugs in areas where it's permitted and thought a scope would help with shot placement when trying to pick out the vitals in the thick brush or in low light conditions.

My questions/thoughts:

1.5X or 4X - and make?
range?
expected accuracy?
mount - B-square or other?
???

or should I just save my money and use the rifle sights as the advantage of a scope will be minimal at rifled slug ranges?

I do not wish to purchase a rifled barrel.

I would think this applies.

have you considered a good red dot 1x?

Instead of a scope check these out. They make one that will clamp onto a shotgun barrel and seem like a good idea for low light.

If you are hunting where I think you are you won't be making long distance shots anyways.

ive experimented with all sorts of optics on my 870. not only did it not look good, but it wasnt comfortable to shoulder, and even with a good quality scope, the eye relief was fair at best.

you see a stock and the lenght of pull, aswell as the rear grip setup on a modern shotgun is built to be shoulerd quickly obtain target and pull the trigger. after trying just about everydifferent combination between cantelevers and side mount, high and low rings see throughs, i realised that i couldnt confidently shoulder my shotgun, because i wasnt able to immadiatly pick up the sight picture as i am used to when i shoulder my shotgun. it just didnt sit proper.

where i hunt there is a shotgun only ssn aswell, we are allowd to use slugs, so i use rifled slugs. with just a rib and a bead, these have never let me down. this year i had a doe running at full bore at 75 paces with not too much lead, and it was red carpet from there. the accuracy and power are fine for brush hunting. i wouldnt say for these slugs that a scope is nessasary, or usefull for that matter. the only way a scope can be usefull, is with a rifled barrell.

all in all if its confidence is what you seek, i agree with homer a red dot can be used. but it will all come down to feel. if you think you will be comfortable with a scope, you will have to try it. hope this helps
