I have been looking at several. The most economical appears to be the Steyr HS-50. I see several for sale in the EE and am wondering if they are worth the money etc? Reviews anyone?

Past the $5k point there are several rifles in the $7k - $10k range...suggestions?

Is anyone a member at Genesee Range? IS there lots of 50 BMG shooters that are members?

Considering a 50 cal launches $12.00-15.00 with every squeeze of the trigger, I find the question slightly humourous.

If you want an accurate 50, no question: speak with Rick at Alberta Tactical.

I reload so the bullet cost is somewhat mitigated. I want a 50, just trying to decide if some of the more expensive guns are worth it over the Steyr HS50

No doubt that ATRS build some of the most accurate rifles out there; however they are fairly expensive when you compare against some of factory builds out there.

How many rounds can you shoot through a barrel before it needs to be replaced (500 or so)? I would look at any with a magazine and one that you can buy barrels for and are easy to change. Nemesis comes to mind, but the best advice was given, talk to Rick at ATRS. None you are looking at are Junk and will all shoot well.

I recently had the same decision, tried to ask for help/opinions and came up short.

Here is my $0.02

I went with the steyr route, and am satisfied with my decision. It shoots better than I do and lets face it, it has cool factor beyond anything that isnt full auto.

Now for the important details. $$$$

If you buy the steyr, plan to spend $1.5-2k for optics worthy of the distance you will be able to shoot with it. Then invest $600-$1200 in reloading equipment, as nothing else you own will work on the big beast. NOW, if you still have a few bucks in your savings account hand out $150-$200 for some brass, $50 for 100 primers, and $150 for 100 pulled M2 ball FMJ bullets which are moderately craptastic, AND $100 worth of difficult to find ultra slow powder to feed those 100 rounds. I didn't even bother to include shipping, because you dont live close to someone that sells all these components or might have anything in stock, unless you travel to calgary to visit Rick.

You can add cost from there if you buy a more expensive rifle, because why would you shoot crap from a work of art.

Do I love it, hell yes. Is it for everyone, hell no.

Offset the cost by telling your friends it will rip a man in half if you shoot it near their body and charge $20 a pop! :D

I think your assessment is missing some issues.

I know several guys that own the HS50 that are unhappy with the accuracy it delivers.
Everyone is unhappy with both the sh1t it throws all over you ever time you pull the trigger (prone), and the 6-7 pound trigger.
The scope base has no slope to help with extreme range....Want a 20 minute scope base?
Good luck with that. ;)

For give or take a thousand bucks more Ricks rifle WILL make you happy.
Given the expense of everything else involved the AB Tac 50's are a bargain.

plus or minus a thousand bucks is quite a range. What is the price of a Tac 50?

As far as the Steyr goes, brakes can be changed and 20 MOA base can be made. IF I can get a Steyr for 5k from the EE how does that compare with Ricks prices?

The brake is $500.00 and the custom one off base is how much $500-1000.00?
So in other words for the same money you have a working rifle with an average barrel and a crappy trigger?

A tac 50 is in another price dimension...Good luck getting one in Canada.
The PGW rifle would be my choice there.

FWIW 2 of the 4 HS-50's I saw for sale in the EE are for sale because the owners are upgrading to a better rifle.

Our base model rifle is $6500.00 and includes a gill brake that is well proven to be more efficient and a rail made to your desire. They come with a match trigger that can easily be set down to 2lbs AND the Big Mac stock we use actually fits the human body with NO contortion.

The Steyr is a decent rifle to be sure, but it is essentially an anti material rifle NOT a precision rifle.
We have a nicely broken in 50 that SHOOTS extremely well for sale for the same $$ as a used Steyr so am confused by some of the posts.
Barrel life on most 50s is WELL over 500 rnds, closer to 2000 or more unless you shoot it so hot you can cook over the barrel.

50 bmg

You have a PM. Although I am not that interested in the used one you have for sale, I would be interested in hearing about your Big Mac stocked version.
