So I want to thank everyone who helped me out on this forum. I've asked a lot of questions and it resulted in succes.

I shot my first deer out in waiporous area close to Calgary AB. It was pretty funny when it came time to field dress it. I am new to it and the only place I'd seen a deer get field dressed was from some youtube clips posted here. I was with my brother who has even less clue than me. Thankfully we took it slow and it went well. I also butchered the deer myself. I would watch a few minutes of a clip on youtube then go cut a section of the deer then watch a few mins. Lol it all worked out though and I now cannot get enough of the taste. Me and the family will be all eaten out of venison in no time at all. Right now I am currying a bit of the deer and I'll let you all know how that tastes when it's done if you'd like.

Just out of curiosity I was wondering if anyone knew any areas public or people I could ask for private acess in some of the areas where hunting is open till the 20th. I still have a whitetail tag and wouldn't mind using it. Especially if whitetails taste as good as mulies.

It was a 2 point mulie and I shot it from standing at a distance of about 130 yards. Bullet went through and through, right through both lungs. I didnt ruin any meat and the deer died within seconds.

Hey congrats! That's quite a story on how you did it all yourself with no help from anyone--- good for you! Did you draw for that mulie in the Wiaporous area or can you use a general tag there?

It was a general tag, I was hunting in the 412, and the curry turned out delicous.

Nice! It can't be that easy to find deer out there especially if you can use a general tag and everyone and their dog will be out there hunting along side you seeing as it's crown land.
That's a nice, young buck. The meat will be very tender and won't have the gamey taste of an older buck. The white tails taste much the same to me, you just don't get as much meat because they're usually smaller.

Tag

Is that the tag under your hand? It looks as if it is. If so you may want to read the regulations so the animal is tagged in the correct spot. You may get your self in a heap of trouble if a CO pulls you over and it is tagged incorrectly. Not to mention it is your responsibility to know the rules before you go hunting.

i also got my first deer this year on my own, field dressing was easy but only because i worked in a small slaghter house when i was a teen goats, sheep and alpaca's were a regular thing

i failed in the whitetail department this season. i do however know where they are and they better watch it next year :D

Any difference in taste will be due more to what the deer has been eating rather than which species.

Don't be in a hurry to eat all that venison. You may shoot a thousand but it is very unlikely you'll ever get one that tastes as good as your first.

Yes, that does look like the tag on the antler, glad you have one but you can get yourself in a goodly spot of unneccessary trouble for improper tagging. They're sticklers on that, check the regs, here's how the tag goes on, around the tendon, back leg:

They are stickly here, too, that's why they give us three tags per animal: Antler (through the ear of an antlerless animal,) hide, and meat (suggests through a rib.)

I did wrap the tag around the antler. When I got out there I realized I forgot the wire bit at home and figured improperly tagged was better than not tagged so I came up with that.

I tagged my second ever deer through the ear out of ignorance too. Because I bought my tags online this year, I didn't have enough wires and had to tag one deer with a length of rope instead of the "official" wire.
.
Now that yours is in the freezer it shouldn't matter. Congrats on taking a deer out of a tough zone to hunt.
