US Military Replacing the M16? New XM8 Model

Holy f00K, sleeping beauty just woke up from her coma...

I never thought the topic of the "Barracuda" rifle would ever come back up.

Doc, look, it's the new colt XM8...

2011 is coming ,
Who want to talk about the new pistol replacement for Beretta M9 in the US Army ?

Or let me dream the change of the Browning High Power or the C7 in the Canadian Army ...

Don't worry, the Canadian Forces is hard at work (spending dollars desperately needed elsewhere) designing the "next generation" of individual weapon for war fighters - or some other sack of sh*t marketing phrase for a new rifle where none is needed. There are millions being spent now, in our names, to define the criteria needed in a new rifle - which will probably result in a fraction of one per cent gain in hit probability. It's not at all that the CF is trying to redesign the wheel, it's just that they don't like the roundness of the current wheel, and feel that if they work at it they'll somehow be able to produce a wheel without the overall roundness, that will function better at least 1% of the time.

Its fun to play with on video games:D

True. True. Somebody mentioned the OICW (Objective Individual Combat Weapon). Way back in the original Ghost Recon game I used to use that thing almost exclusively. It was everything. It was a fully automatic assault rifle with 30 round mags. A semi-automatic rifle which could be used as a sniper rifle with a 6x scope, including night vison. And a 5-shot semi-automatic grenade launcher which, if you emptied onto a target, would just about take out a small village or an enemy platoon. You were a damn one-man army with that thing. You didn't even need the rest of your squad.

In reality though, it is just comically large looking. Sort of like the F2000/FS2000 but substantially bigger. Wikipedia is saying 8.2 KG loaded, which is closing in on 3 times the weight of a loaded M4 carbine, but granted the big OICW does a lot more.

The imfdb page has a decent photo of the version I am thinking of (the first photo in this link). Very large.

My two cents, there will have to be major advancements in ammunition design - something really revolutionary - before armed forces start to adopt anything too radical.

Having said that, if they can figure out a way to incorporate a mag-fed semi-automatic grenade launcher into a bullpup assault rifle that isn't too bulky or too heavy... the increase in firepower at both the squad and individual levels goes way way up. And that is a very good thing for our guys and gals when they go into harms way.

XM-8 with PCAP's attachment was PEO Soldiers intended new weapons system.

M1913 Rail requirement was for the SCAR, and Hk made a version for that.

Yeah, no. When you are carrying 20 grenades at damn near a pound each making them count is more important than making noise. That and no damn Bullpup. They look cool but have so many faults in real world use.

I thought we saw a glimpse of the next generation of firearms... back in the 1980s. G11, anyone? That was the only actual advanced projectile firearm ever created. Everything else so far is simply just a different variation of each other. Caseless ammunition is where it's at (until they develop energy-based weapons).

All the money they spent developing a new rifle that is essentially the same bloody thing as all of the assault rifles over the past 65 years (with marked improvements of course), it could have been put into research to make a more improved and cost-effective version of a caseless projectile weapon system. The only drawbacks to the G11 was mainly due to the level of technology and available material 20 years ago. There have been many advancements that they could very well have improved the G11 design and created an entire modern, next generation assault rifle.

I still think the G11 is the future of projectile firearms. Just needs some brilliant small arms engineer to realize it. That, or until they revolutionize warfare with alternate energy munitions.

Yah, no doubt. Maybe the Germans can combine the OICW with the G11 to create.... the biggest, boxy-est, blackest, plasticy, über box-rifle of all time!! And yes, it would be perfect for immediate deployment to Klendathu. The Colonial Marines will probabably buy a few for fleet deployment on the Sulaco as well.

A force to be reckoned with though. I suppose if you add up all the parts you end up with a single soldier carrying 600 rounds of caseless ammo in 50 round mags; firing it out of a select-fire weapon with a ``target identification and optic system`` (sounds pretty fancy! :) ), topped off with at least 5 rounds of semi-auto fired air-burst grenades. The bugs don`t stand a chance!

Caseless helps keep the weight way down, apparantly.

It will likely be a frosty Friday in July before any of this comes to pass though. Most militaries (including all the NATO ones) are issuing rifles whose designs can be traced directly to the 1940s and 50s.

By the way, any of you ever look at the ``service rifle by country`` thing on Wikipedia? It`s actually pretty interesting for those like me who don`t live and die this stuff. The first link is by far the more interesting one.

Talk about a sarcasm saturated post. So you're obviously in the camp of "don't change anything, keep everything the same". Than I'm sure you're fine as a pig in sh*t over the many pointless (new & improved) designs that are under trial right now to replace an already well tested and combat proven rifle for one of a marginally improved but ultimately similar design.

I say it's a waste of time and money. If they really want a better service rifle they should put the funding into developing a rifle from a concept that is definitely better but only needs to be redesigned to accommodate modern technology/material (like I already said).

The G11 in itself is an older weapon (even though it is more advanced), but they can base their research and development off of it and create something that would meet all the needs of a service rifle. It even says on Wiki that the US is using the G11 technology as a template to replace their LMGs.

Your unnecessary exaggeration only shows your obvious bias towards H&K (or any of the "plastic gun" developers). And you specifically attack it's appearance. Seriously? Who cares. The uglier the better. It's a tool for mass killing, not your girlfriend. Doesn't have to be pretty.

Mein gott.

it was scraped.. its just a g36 with a new look

Which is just a plastic AR-180. Which was a "cheap stamped-steel Armalite" using a piston.

And what was the AR-15 originally designed for? B-52 pilots doing the nuke mission over the arctic circle, this was to be their survival rifle: take vermin with a shot for food, defend from a handful of Soviets trying to capture them, and full auto to stop the polar bear from eating them! The early versions were especially light, pencil-thin barrels, and hollow buttstocks (they filled them with dense foam later due to noise on patrols). The Green Berets first saw some USAF types guarding planes with them, tried them in the jungles, and history followed.

well i know my guns arent for mass killing... except for gophers...

but hk rifles are awesome, reliable, accurate,... and pretty...

I got a chance to feel up some real hk rifles in a swat armory once, they are very nice high quality rifles. especially the MSG90A1. I fell in love and was dragged away...
