The hole in my rear sight aperture on my M305 is way lower than others I've seen, and I would like to replace it with an Italian M1 aperture.

My question is - can I just buy an M1 aperture and install it using the other original rear sight parts, or do I have to buy an entire M1 rear sight assembly?

Nope should be as simple as drop in and that's it. Although some people need that 11 click first adjustment and some of the NM rear sight's need there bottom tab to be filed.

Is that all I need to do - or am I better off replacing the entire rear sight assembly?

It's up to you. Some Norinco's came with bad mechanisms that never worked right and were impossible to adjust to click properly. I've had both good and bad. If mine was good and it was way cheaper to replace just the aperture, I'd only replace the aperture. If the price is close, then swap the whole thing out for a higher quality mechanism. The italian mechanisms probably have better machining, metal, heat treating of threads. You could always do both if you want a NM smaller aperture. The battle size aperture is there for a reason, it's usable in lower light conditions. I wouldn't put a NM on a field gun.

Here is my post war Beretta "Type 4" M1 rear sight set-up

I kept the factory sight block and cover. Overall, I have been very happy with its performance.

Aperature marked "BMR"
Windage Knob and Elevation Pinion marked "P-B"
