I am seriously considering one of these for my next rifle and just wanted to hear from owners good or bad. I am looking at the tropical model with the open sights.

I may go 375 ruger but think I'll probably go H&H. Opinions?

The Ruger #1 is the classiest, most beautiful regular-production gun out there, IMHO. I've had several, and all were accurate, had decent triggers, and were very nicely fit and finished. People with shortish necks or arms might need to use extension rings to achieve proper eye relief with a scope. If accuracy needs improvement, Brownell's sells a neat little gadget that allows for adjusting upward pressure on the barrel. You can also easily adjust the ejector spring pressure, from straight extractor all the way to throwing 'em into the weeds.

The #1 stock delivers a lot of felt recoil to some folks, me included. My #1 in .375H&H whacked me much harder than any of my other .375's, my .416Rigby or an older Weatherby in .340WMag. In fairness, one of my buddies finds the #1 stock very comfortable and easy to shoot well.

Cartridge? Easy...the H&H all the way. The only advantage to the .375Ruger is the short OAL, which allows the use of shorter, lighter, less expensive bolt rifle actions. In the #1, this is meaningless. If you were buying a stainless/synthetic utilitarian bolt gun, the Ruger round's advantages MIGHT outweigh the totally tasteless nature of the cartridge. In a beautiful rifle like the #1, you deserve a proper cartridge, i.e. the H&H.:D

Ignore anything that Gatehouse has to say.

Good luck and enjoy!

I love my No 1 375 H&H...Mine is the stainless with the laminate stock...recoil is about the same as my Sako 75 in 338 win mag. Mine will shoot consistent 1 inch 3 shot groups off the bench. I would stick with the 375 H&H...lot easier to get ammo for or brass if you reload...and as already stated the AOL of the cartridge makes lil difference in a NO 1.

My No 1 tropical in 375 H+H isn't that bad to shoot, thou I haven't shot anything bigger that wasn't mounted to something. One would guess the 375 H+H rds would be easier to come by if you start hunting off the "main road". And would guess they'd be cheaper.

I've owned one and really liked it. There is one reason I might consider the .375 Ruger over the .375 H&H in the No.1 - although I hasten to add that the H&H is a superior cartridge - and that is that the Ruger is available in the medium sporter which weighs 7.5lbs vs. +9lbs for the Tropical model.

:)

I have a .375 and .300 Wthby in the #1 Ruger, I am fond of both and was lucky to get them with nicely figured stocks. As far as recoil the .300 "seems" to beat on me more than the .375, the .375 is more of a push where as the .300 hits you with more snap. Jmy.02worth. --- John303.

Awesome rifle and cartridge, I had a Number 1 in 416 Rem Mag. It was just too heavy at 11lbs, but I did have one in 375 that was about 8 lbs and was great. Economics of the time is the only reason it is gone

The #1 is a fine rifle and the.375 H&H is a great round. You might find that it isn't quite right out of the box however, and this might save you some time. My #1 .416 Rigby's butt stock failed after the first few rounds were fired. IIRC, you may want to shorten up the LOP a bit, which would give you the opportunity to upgrade the recoil pad. The factory doesn't put enough care into bedding the stock to the receiver. Get this done right out of the gate to save yourself some time. Some folks have found that the quarter rib doesn't put the scope in the right place; I was one of them. My solution was a custom quarter rib inletted for Talley QD rings. This allowed me to mount a 1.5-5X Leupold so the ocular was even with the front face of the falling block. As a result nothing was in the way of the loading port. The rear sight was poor, but I understand there is now a ghost ring that can be easily installed.
