BTW, even the experts say that the 1866 and the 1873 should NOT be stripped, better left to a gunsmith....

That said, you do not have to strip it down for simple cleaning

John is correct about the simple cleaning part. The 1866/1873 rifles are very easy to strip and assemble. If you shoot black powder you will have to take the rifle apart to clean. If you have one in .45 colt you will have to take it apart to clean. To much blow back from that cartridge. It gets very dirty inside.

There are a lot of books and videos available out there as well. I have a book from Radocy that I purchased on Ebay.
