I loaded about 500 9mm last week using CCI primers with my RCBS hand prime tool, now i had to switch to federal primers and they seem softer then the CCI. With the same pressure while priming they seem to get a indent the size of the rod. I'm using the same rod (small) and both are small pistol primers. Is it me or what?

Which is why Lee is pretty clear in their instructions never to use federal primers with their equipment.

I think that Federal primers are definitely softer, in my S&W 625 my hand loads were having tons of FTF. Switched from CCI to Federal and the problem went away.
In the Miculek spring kit it even specifically says to use Federal primers as they are softer.

Federal Primers are soft however I have never had one go off while priming. It is possible but not very likely to occur.
Federals are the choice of most PPC wheel gunners because they are softer and the main spring can be set lighter.
I did have one go off in a Lee 1000. It did not have a chain reaction like that other fellow though. Just scared the crap ot of me and taught me to not force anything on a press.

You'll be fine with the Federals.
Every time you change anything when reloading, you need to re-assess your output based on your change in components. Bullets are all different shapes, primers can be different heights and even the same brand and type of powder can vary between batches.
You just changed the supplier of a component, so you should re-adjust your tool's primer depth setting to match that new brand of component.

They are very stable - never a problem loading 1000's...
