The serial number and caliber is what makes a revolver an antique. As long as the part with the serial number was made before 1898 you can do whatever you want to repair or change it to an antique caliber.

Some old guns have the serial number on a variety of parts. Not all parts with the pre-1898 serial number need to stay on the gun, just the frame. Strictly speaking, it is the date of the frame and the caliber that makes it an antique. Guns often have a history of repaired or replaced parts, but the frame must stay the same and the caliber must stay off the no-go list (see the sticky flow chart for antiques).

So I've seen such beautiful restore jobs done here it makes me wonder how someone would go about the job.

For exampe I'm looking at that beautiful Colt SAA listed on the EE for $4100, or $4500 with the second .455 cylinder. How did Dingus go about making it .45 ACP? Would you order it in as .45 colt, and then have a gunsmith alter the cyliner to accept .45acp, then de-register it? Or would it just be something as simple as ordering in another cylinder (which seems to be the answer for this one as it has two cylinders)? If you did order a .45 colt SAA could you have it converted to .45acp or .45 schofield and and then get it de-registered?

How much can be done to an antique firearm in repairs and it still remain an antique? If a revolving cylinder is badly damaged could it be swapped out with a new modern one of the same caliber? Is this still an area that's considered that the frame is the firearm, and the barrel, grip, cyliner, stock, etc, can be swapped out for repairs or new parts?

It remains an antique regardless of the alterations or new parts added - as long as the frame is retained and it is not altered to fire one of the forbidden cartridges.

On the other hand, it is also possible to convert a non-antique pre-1898 to antique status by changing the chambering from the forbidden chambering to something else. For instance a correct vintage SAA .45 long colt could be converted to antique status by buying and installing a new cylinder chambered for .45acp, .455, or .45 schofield. Once it's re-chambered just deregister and - Presto - instant antique.

Dingus, you are killing me! Just when I thought I had seen it all when it comes to some of your gorgeous antique Colt SAA's, you come up and show us all this outstanding one. There are a lot of addicts here and you are not helping us at all in kicking our addiction!;)

On the other hand, I'm still doggonned happy with my antique Colt SAA in 45 Schofield shown below .....

Nice, as beautiful as Dingus's Colt is I gotta admit I really like win 38-55's more honest looking softly patinaed SAA.

Incidentally, outstanding photography, as usual.

Bit out of my price range....But let me just say hot damn

beloved by lawmen and owlhoots alike!!

OP - keep in mind you'll probably be best off with guns needing repair rather than a "new" condition antique. You'll get a discount on a non-functional gun, and you'll be working on it to get the timing etc on the new cylinder right anyways.
