CZ 452 American dovetail and rings

The 452 American has an 11mm dovetail.

Wrong.

It is a 3/8" dovetail on the 452 American, measured across the top it measures 12.5mm. This seems to be where some of the confusion comes from as most folks don't understand what dovetail the CZ's come with.

However I believe for some reason, but I'm not sur, that the varmint model has a 3/8 dovetail.

Partially right, see below.

To help those that don't understand, here is the CZ chart:

To help finish up this thread and help some understand, I stole these pics to show the problem and what I found in the end.

Here is the problem as I am seeing it:

These are the Burris deluxe rimfire rings, the same as I what I have and where I noticed the problem:

See the problem? Might not be a problem to some but I like things done properly and to me these are a very poor fit and I didn't like how the rings were canted.

After a pile of reading I noticed lots of folks mentioning Talley was the way to go and get a very nice fit. So I pulled a set of fixed Talley rings from one of my other rifles and what do you know, a perfect fit. I just need to get a higher ring to mount my VX 2-7 compact and have the bolt clear nicely. The Talley part number I have now is #100003 and one I need is #100004 which is the medium height ring.

In the end this is what it will look like other than these are #100005 which are Talley high rings.

You will not find rings to fit the 3/8" CZ rings properly.
A standard 3/8" dovetail measures 0.375" at the bottom and has
a 60 deg. included angle.
The CZ dovetail measures 0.375 at the bottom but has a larger
(not sure what) included angle which makes it bigger at the top.
Bottom line is: If the angles don't match... it's no good because
it will not be a solid mount.
Because I fixed my rifle, any 3/8" rings will fit properly.

The Talley rings fit good enough for me. As Far as I can see they are a perfect fit. Have you tried them?

Anyways, I won't be filing the dovetail on this or any other rifle. I would rather file on a set of rings.

The main cause for confusion and fitting problems lies with the fact that the CZ 452 American uses a 3/8" dovetail while all other 452 models are 11mm (Lux, trainer, Ultra Lux, Scout), etc...

I understand that all versions of the new CZ 455 (replacing the 452's (except left hand models in 22lr & .17)) are going to have a 3/8" rail.

Despite this obvious fact, I have heard about this problem.

I didn't find any deviation on my American as noted earlier in this thread...perhaps CZ has finally got it right!

Where are you getting the Talley's from? I have another CZ 3/8" dovetail rifle I need to get rings for.

Those photos of the Burris rings look terrible.

Haven't got them yet but Prophet River (CGN sponsor) should have some in stock in a short time (around ten days). I have ordered right from Talley in the past as well and never had any problems at all.

Furthermore

The Talley rings are a marvelous fit indeed, seen a few CZs scoped with Talleys.
The low rings will accommodate up to 38mm non AO scopes, or up to 32/33mm with AO. Clay at Prophet River seemed to think the rings may fit both rail sizes, perhaps due to the split design. If anyone is interested I have a NIB set of low Talley rings I'd be willing to part with at a reasonable cost.

Another vote here for the Talleys. After much contemplation and some good advice from the people on rimfire central, I bought some and put them on my 16" barreled 452 American and they look to fit perfectly to my eyes.

i got talley's on my 452 varmint.. they are super sweet... ! and the service was good...

had millets on mine and others and the same thing.. they don't fit right..

just remember to get the high mounts... you'll need the high ones to clear the scope ... unless you use one of those cheepo scopes with small dia

I just got a CZ453 Varmint in 17HMR. It "should" have the 3/8" dovetail like an American, according to CZ's website. I bought Talley 100005 rings that are 3/8". Even with no scope in the rings, and the gap fully closed up between the rings, they are loose on the dovetail. You can almost lift the rings off they are that loose. What gives?

I tried a set of cheap chinese freeby type 3/8 rings and the fit perfectly. Too tall to look sensible, but they fit.

Dammit, I just measured them, 11mm across the top of the grooves. I don't think they are 3/8" and I don't think that CZ chart is right. Looks like FLUTED 17hmr Varmints are the exception to the 3/8 for 17hmr.

Every one is missing the boat, as CZ sells there own priotary rings in several configurations , I prefer the 2 piece ring base set up. You can get one piece rings also solid one piece base with set of rings. They are similiar to Sako optilock ring sets exactly. I have also used these on my Sako P94S range with great success! The talleys in steel and a great alternative also. If you are looking for something differrent, you can order through Stoeger Canada a set of Sako Optilock rings made for there new Quad 22rf rifle, they have the plastic inserts to protect your scope from getting ring marks! They are not cheap arounf $90-$100, but the CZ 2 piece base/ring types run about the same, the CZ base/ring sets are your best solid ring set I have used in the last 22 years that are available to us here in Canada. I haven't recieved my Sako Quad Optilock rings yet, but will let you know how they compare when they arrive! cheers Dale Z in T-Bay
