Firearms/WW2 things to do near Cannes,France. Jan22-26?

I'm going to be in Cannes, France from Jan 22nd until the 26th, for some work stuff, but have the option of staying 7-10 days extra afterwards if I want.

I've never been to france, but would love to experience as much history and firearms related activities as possible.

I don't mind traveling away from Cannes to see stuff, but need to obviously maximize what I can see since i'll only have 7-10 days.

Any suggestions on things I shouldn't miss?

I realize going in the winter might not be optimal, but thats when the business trip got scheduled, so i've gotta make the best of it.
 
Not sure about the firearms aspect, but having been to Europe a couple times, i'd strongly recommend getting a rail pass and planning out a route. Make it a loop that brings you back to your departure point on the right day and spend a day here, a day there. Tr to hit some War Memorials, its surreal. Oh and takes lots of pics to post here!
 
"...Can you guess the most common phrase uttered..." Parlez vous humma-humma? Voulez-vous coucher avec moi? No derogatory comments about the French military. It's not funny. It's an insult to the entire generation killed in W.W. I, the W.W. II Resistance fighters tortured to death, the French 2nd Armoured Div. and the Paras at Dien Bien Phu.
Cannes is very close to where the Allied landings happened. Read 'The Black Devils'(1st SSF) first. Mind you, 7 to 10 days is enough time to go up to the Juno Centre, in Normandy, by rail. Vimy isn't that far from Normandy either.
Like HeavyT says, buy the rail pass. Trains in France aren't like they are here. High speed things. Domestic rail travel requires a reservation though.

I spent a year in France, back in the 60's. Go to as many war graves of our country men that you have time to find, or in latter years, you may reget wasting your time chasing French who es, like I did.
 
The old city of Antibes is close to Cannes. next train stop. A nice interesting city to visit.

If you rent a car, Monaco is worth a day visit, about an hour away.

Just beyond Monaco you cross over to Italy. No border stop, just a Welcome to italy sign. The litle town of Ventimiglia is well worth a day visit.

I saw no sign of WW2 in the area.
