So why no extended charging handle for the USC45/UMP? (56k warning)

I mean, come on. HK is infamous for oversize controls and oversize trigger guards and stuff, but their charging handle is teeny weeny compared to a lot of others out there!

I mean, ESPECIALLY if you like to have all the rails on, or you use grip panels instead of a vertical grip. Its very difficult to get to the handle, amiright?

How you sposed to get to that stupid thing if you have a malfunction in a 3-gun match or something? or especially in our cold winters!

Now just imagine......

Machined from 1018 cold rolled steel...

A bit of finishing later...

Now how much better would something like that be! :D

Now before you guys get all excited just remember this is a prototype (not for sale). 2 made right now.... the one shown, and another blank that im going to make a more refined charging handle pad for. SO, Whaddya think? :D

Looks good. Only suggestions I can make is to go with 4140, make it one piece.

I dont know a huge amount about different types of steel, But I took a vice grip on one and, and put the other into my bench vice, and tried to bend it, and it lifted up the work bench on the other end! :p. Would 4140 be stronger and/or more flexible?

The machining for the charging pad would probably take a lot, its got some pretty good curves on it so you can do the HK slap without it biting you at all. But the steel shank goes all the way through right to the end of the pad.

###y. Except for when it catches on the sling, or pokes the abdomen when pressed against the body. But other than that, looks like a really good mod. Maybe you could make one that folds along the receiver when not in use, sort of like on the FS2000/F2000?

A fold flat handle would be cool (like the G3 sorta too), but Im not sure if I could retain the internal "lock" (the prevents it from moving back and forth) and make it fold flat, without a bunch of different parts. I sorta have an idea of what I could do to make it work, but it would cost at least twice as much to get the 2 parts made to work together.

It actually doesn't stick out that much, I tried some transition "drops" (letting the rifle go) with my single point sling, and the handle hits at the top of the legs. Although the length can be changed. I made this one stick out 20mm further than the factory charging handle.

I put a rail grabber sling loop at the front, and at the rear of the side picatinny rail (under the handle) and there was still tons of room to grab the charging handle and not bump into the sling. Of course if you use the HK factory front sling mount, the sling is gonna be way out of the way of the charging handle, unless its flapping around in the wind :p

Indirectly he's using the mass of the rail and cover to suppress the recoil.

Mostly when I hold the gun I use the vertical grip like a magpul AFG so my thumb rides along the rail to get a good grip.

I actually like a gun without a vertical grip better, but the USC grip isn't long enough to be comfortable to hold. So using the vertical grip and the side rails gives a better grip surface.

I know, Im anal when it comes to grip styles..... :p
