I want to shoot my AR at the indoor range which means being able to convert it to 9mm or .22.

With something like this from Questar:

CMMG - 22LR Caliber Conversion Kit
https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopexd.asp?id=979&bc=no

Is it really as easy as changing the bolt carrier group and shooting? Same barrel, same hammer, same buffer etc?

My understanding is that converting to shoot .223 and 9mm from the same lower is a bit more complicated and a lot more expensive, obviously a dedicated upper would be required at a minimum.

My ar is a 14.5 inch 1/9 barrel.

9mm would require a 9mm upper like you said. You'd also need a mag well adapter (for Colt style guns) and mags. Some mag adaptors require you to get a special 9mm bolt hold open device with an extended tab others don't. It would be a good idea to get the heavier 9mm buffer and you might have to change your hammer if the face is notched, that or ramp your bolt. Of course if you don't care about the bolt hold open device then it doesn't really matter.

HOLY s**t! i payed less then 150 for mine! and mags where 19.99 each from cmmg direct

and you had no issues with cross border shipping? It appears that I can get the kit with 4 mags for roughly the same price as questar...

this kit seems very tempting...

edit: on second glance their website does not ship to canada... any input?

Mine works great. I was all set and had my paperwork ready to purchase and import one from Brownells when I found a lightly used one on CGN.

My daughter loves shooting the AR with it. Way more fun than her single shot .22 :D

I picked up the stainless CMMG one from Arms East for 245.00. Great price! Beat Questar by about 40 bucks even with their christmas discount, and it is the newer stainless one.

Now I am semi-resisting the urge to build a dedicated upper....I say semi, because I am actually shopping for parts lol Anyone know where to get an actual .22lr barrel? I understand it would be more accurate then a .223.
