There's a used Winchester 1200 Police for sale but I am finding it difficult to find much web info on them.

Any knowledge people have is appreciated.

Only description to go on without seeing it is:

Winchester 1200 Police - 12GA X 3", 18.5" BBL, VERY GOOD BORE, MARINE COAT/MATTE SILVER FINISH, FOLDING PISTOL GRIP STOCK, BEAD SIGHT, FIXED CYL CHOKE. $349.

Thanks for any responses :shotgun:

It's just a 1200. Made until 1981. The SS barrels are reported to rust easily. Winchester quit making the 1200 and came out with a plated Model 1300.

Hard to find in good shape. Folding stocks not original IIRC. The last 1200 Police I seen sell on the EE went for several hundered more than the price you have listed. However it had the original wood stocks and was in mint shape. The increased value has more to do with the rarity of the gun than anything. In terms of function it's a 1200 that's shinier. I know that some of them came with flip up rifle sights.

Cheers guys.

Can you confirm that in stock shape this is what it should look like?

Any idea how a Winchester of this year is for reliability/durability & build quality?
Sunray mentioned rusting of the barrel for example.

Thanks again guys.

AFAIK that's what it should look like. I did see a pic or two once that only had a bead and no rifle sights.

The 2nd question is a can of worms. Some people will tell you they were the worst guns ever created, the other 50% will say they've had one forever and it never let them down. I can only give you my personal experiance. I like the 1200/1300s myself. I've had a few different ones and only had one issue, that is now fixed. The magazine tube retainers are plastic and from what I've heard can cause feeding problems if they break. I've never had any break on me but others have. The 1200/1300 are a smooth and fast gun if you learn how to handle them. From what I've read they did have issues with rust. If you're the type who cleans and oils regularly this shouldn't conern you, if not you may want to steer clear as they did have reported problems.

Will you have the chance to see the gun in person?

Cheers guys.

"...that's what it should look like..." Yep. The U.S. sites I looked at all said the SS barrels rusted more than a plated barrel. Winchester must have bought bad SS.
There was one picture with a lighter coloured stock, but the same shape. You'd like a proper stock anyway. Mind you, a folding stock is better than a pistol grip only.
