Have a chance to buy a rife in 7mm-08. Have never owned or shot this caliper so I was wondering what it compares to.Would it be ok for deer and coyote. Thanks in advance for the feedback

It's a nice cartridge. Recoils little, is accurate and will certainly take anything you can point it at in NS whether that be coyote, deer, bear or even moose if you hit the lottery jackpot for C.B.I.

It's very similar to the 270, 280, 308, 30-06 etc. No animal will ever know the difference.

Just use good 140 grain bullets and make life easy. If you handload the 120 and 140 are great.

In short you can't go wrong, it's a winner.

7-08 one load

I've had mine for a very short time, I tried the 145 speer sp and they shot well soooooo I will use the 150gr patition and IMR4895 This will give me a vel of about 2650 or a bit more from a 20" barrel. This should be good for everything up to & including moose.

7mm-08 may be a little hard on the pelts of coyotes but in a light handy rifle like a BLR or remington model 7 with a good 1.5-5 or similar scope it would be a great all around rifle for the east coast.

Owned Mine for 5 years or so. Mainly my Sheep hunting Rifle, but I have killed Elk, Moose and Black Bear, oh and a goat. Works awesome. I got the model 7. Its Loud due to the short barrel. But shoots great. Kills Better..

A little bit big for coyotes if you are trying to save the pelts, otherwise it is great round for deer on down to coyotes...

Improper bullets will have more to do with pelt damage than cartridge selection. A proper varmint bullet like Hornady VMAX (120gr in 7mm) would be ideal.

I've used one for over 30 years, on everything from bunnies to bears. - dan

so you was in on it right from the start! Cool. I'm sort of a rookie with the cal, and love the cal immensely, so far. Have 4 rifles in that cal and just getting started on them, really. Hunted this season with my Sako A7, but never got to squeeze and Jr #3 got a nice buck with the Browning Micro Medallion. I got a decent buck a couple yrs back with my Mod 7 custom KS. The BLR has not taken one, yet. And the old Sako (forget the model) is gone. :)

Thing is with this and many other cartridges like stated previously in this thread it depends a great deal on bullet selection for intended usage.

The days of needing massive power and velocity to down an animal of any decent size are long gone. Technology has come a long way , a .243 with a proper bullet can get better penetration than a large magnum with mediocre bullets(read the Nosler reloading manual for that tid bit).

The 7-08 can push top quality high BC bullets at very good velocities and still do it safely with little recoil and great accuracy. A 140gr premium bullet at 2800+ft/sec will down anything we will be shooting at here in Canada. You can load heavy match grade bullets for target or you can load light HP bullets for varmint. The selection of 7mm bullets out there is almost overwhelming at times and the uses for them are endless.

Not saying this is the be all end all cartridge but with today's options in rifles and ammunition it is a very , very flexible chambering, just like other SA cartridges like .260, 6.5x55 , etc..............

Bottom line, 7-08 will work!!!
