Luckily I slept like crap after my midnight shift last night so I was awake when the courier guy arrived.:) It's been a long time coming. I got this one from Moreguns Supply.

Nice box. Includes everything pictured.

Cleaning kit. Like the other CSA carbine I shot, the gas pick has no elevation tool.

IMG_1411Medium.jpg

Left and right sides.

IMG_1414Medium.jpg

As shown, the front sight is drifted way to the left. The sight doesn't appear canted, so hopefully it's just poor assembly QC and not zeroed there.

IMG_1415Medium.jpg

Folded.

IMG_1417Medium.jpg

North Eastern Arms upper handguard fit right on, nice and snug.

IMG_1419Medium.jpg

Scope rail. It's solid steel.

IMG_1422Medium.jpg

Gas block area. It came with the Czech military brake.

A few different muzzle options:

Just the thread protector that comes with. Quite a bit shorter.

NEA Hybrid flash suppressor/brake.

NEA Heavy Brake.

Side-by-side comparison to my 14.5" AR. AR stock one click out.

Unlike the CSA "torture test" carbine I shot, the bolt is not painted underneath, nor does it have the extractor groove milled in near the tab. Maybe those are supposed to be on the 5.56mm guns?

IMG_1434Medium.jpg

Scope rail removed.

IMG_1435Medium.jpg

I tried a Dlask extend mag release. It wouldn't work. Note the different profiles on the top of the releases.

Left CSA, center Dlask, right from CZ858.

IMG_1437Medium.jpg

All ready for the range. Scope rail removed, NEA ambi selector, brake and handguard rail, and Neit Arms ambi mag release installed. A Neit bolt release will make it perfect.

Nice. You going to leave the craptastic folding stock on there?

I've actually come to appreciate mine. I didn't even put on the M4 gear I bought for it.

Hey Stevo - have fun at the range with that heavy break on your new short rifle, it's like getting slapped in the face every time you shoot. I actually prefer to shoot it with no brake attached. At least that's what I found. Muzzle flash is very entertaining.:D

How do you guys find the elevated thumb platform of the ambidextrous grip...?

Does it protrude into your palm/knuckles/fingers with any discomfort...?

And you should be able to sand/grind the top-profile of that Dlask mag-release down to match the factory units, no...?

WoW!
Verry nice picture review
Now that is a major improvement in the finish. It look's black. I just wish that they would have 2 models. 1 with the side mounting rail or 1 with out it mounted.

Nice rifle!

Why did you remove the rail? Is having the ambi safety more important for you than using factory rail with red military POSP scope?

I'm looking forward to it. When I shot the torture test gun the muzzle blast wasn't bad at all with the Czech military brake. We'll see how the NEA is.

I ground off the finger groove on another Fab grip I have and restippled it. Not sure if I'll do this one, too.

I could reshape the Dlask, but there's not really a need when I can swap it for the Neit in one of my other rifles.

Great pics. How are the internals please post some pics if you don't mind I would like to see the difference from the FSN.

This is the only pic I took of the internals. It's a bit out of focus but you can get the general idea.

It's just black instead of grey paint. It does look nice. It would be nice if set-screws were included to plug the scope mount holes when the rail is removed.

Stevo, have you had trouble ejecting cases like another person had in another thread?

Haven't shot it yet, I'll find out tomorrow.

Nice rifle!

Yes, I'd much rather have the ambi selector on this rifle, especially since I don't intend to put a magnified optic on it. I already have the NEA parts to put on so I don't need to buy a CSA side mount. Also, the mount has sharp corners and edges which cause discomfort to my delicate hands.;)

very ###y, cant wait for a range report though! hopefully your new friend doesn't have any of the problems that seem to be popping up lately

From what I've seen and Dude in GP has reported with regards to the "torture test" carbine, I'm not concerned with any of the reported problems. I think the vast majority are mag or lube related and should be easy to sort out. I don't mind a bit of a break-in period.

I'm having a real issue with where to mount my light on my DLASK short conversion. There's no room to put a NEA barrel mounted rail, and there just isn't enough room to mount it on the hand guard and not interfere with my grip. Also, if you do mount it on the hand guard, turn the light on and it lights up the front sight tower like a Christmas tree. Very distracting, especially if you are co-witness on the irons. I've tried offset mounts as well and they still cause the aforementioned problems.

The only thing I can think of is that this POS might work...the screws look long enough that they might fit over the front sight collar.

I know, I know, high class problems.:D

Clobb,
I think I'll try an offset light ring on an NEA lower with a rail segment if I put a light on this one. It will bring the rear of the light up to around 11 o'clock. Glare from the front sight post is an issue on the grey 858s and it will probably still be a factor on the black CSAs. I think a black matte over coat on the top of the barrel and rear of the sight post should take care of most of the glare.

Another option would be a 6 o'clock mount off the bottom of the handguard.

That barrel clamp in your ebay link looks like it would fit around the rear of the sight base. I don't know how solid it would be considering the taper on the rear of the sight base.

congrats stevo.

are the walls on the CSA thicker than you CZ858?

btw , the NEA rail is too loose on my FSN.

I haven't measured anything on the receiver but when Dude in GP measured the demo carbine he couldn't find any significant difference in side-wall thickness.

Have you tried using the set screws to tension the rail or tweaking the ears in with a vise? Is not having the paint on the FSN making the difference in fit?

How's the FSN so far? You got the "W", right?

Stevo, did you try the NEA lower on your carbine? I have a set that came off of my CZ and the lower will not fit the VZ carbine, the upper fits fine but tab on the lower (where it goes into the receiver and is held in by the roll pin) will not fit into the receiver (I'm assuming that it's because of the thicker receiver walls) I can't measure the receiver walls and compare them to the CZ because I sold the CZ in order to buy the VZ :)

I'm just interested to see if anyone else was able to use the NEA lower on their carbines, my handguard may have been one of the original ones and things may have changed on newer models.
