Sniper Rifle Comparison

The mosin nagant sniper rifle despite its somewhat crude design (why fix it if it ain't broke) is a surprisingly accurate weapon.Once it is dialed in using Russian milsurp ammo you can hit a 6 inch gong at 700 meters consistently.I only wish that at the last sniper shoot I had noticed that my scope mount screw had loosened of a bit.Looking forward to the next one Darren.
 
That was a lame assed article - the methodology of their tests were all wrong. It was a day at the range for them and I guess they decided afterwards to write a short paper and submit it to the editor. I'm an amateur gun writer and even I do better work than them. My evaluation would have taken place over days if not weeks.

We actually have enough guys on this site with the necessary shooting skill and appropriate firearms to do a more comprehensive test. Not only that, we can do it over the course of a year in all weather conditions to show which rifles are better suited to extreme weather conditions (ie. the No.4 MK1's trigger being affected by temperature changes and high humidity.)

Then all we have to do is get some gun magazine to publish our findings.:rolleyes:

You would even have enough guns to have a sample size larger than 1 for most of the guns being tested :D

:stirthepot2: The problem with this sort of foolish article is it is not in depth enough, but that aside, the biases for and against these rifles are conventionally based on national ego rather than sound discussion. I frankly am astonished in how the world has changed, from 20 years ago when anything Russian was junk, and the MN was dismissed as a klunker by the US gun mag style of writers. Frankly I don't think the MN is the greatest rifle ever, but I do rate it higher than the LEs, so kudos to US writers who have embraced the truth.

I was woken from the "commie guns are crap" spell in 1993 when I bought a Russian SKS for $100. I marveled at it's simplicity and ruggedness and that wonderful little cartridge the 7.62x39mm. I also became enamoured with the AK-47 after that too. But I've never been able to embrace the Mosin Nagant.

I admit I haven't shot a Nagant, but I haven't been impressed with their workmanship over an Enfield when I've held one. Still, I'm not saying they aren't capable of great accuracy, I would just rather field a tuned Enfield if given the choice. I think the iron sights on the No.4's are far superior.

I would like to have both to shoot side-by-side as a comparison though. But to be totally subjective, it would have to involve hundreds (if not thousands) of rifles in the hands of many skilled shooters to say one platform is superior to the other.

To be honest though, I detest rimmed cartridges. I would much prefer to be shooting a 7x57mm with a 173 gr. spitzer out of an Enfield No.4 MkII.

Any shooter of scoped firearms tends to learn that (or something similar) the hard way :redface: , at least once ....;)
 
The magazine article was OK for what it was but the problem with most of the gun rags is that the articles are, at best, superficial. I agree with an earlier post of Riflechair's that the methodology was poor and I think that many on this site could have written a better, more accurate ( pardon the pun ) and informed paper.
