SRD Alberta is currently conducting an email survey of hunters to determine the success rates for the tags that were purchased. The last question on the survey asks if you thought whether or not crossbows should be included in the Archery Only Season.

The question explains that increased hunter participation and success rates could lead to tags that are now general moving to a draw system.

Your reply choices were: Yes, No, Neutral

In the interests of how different types of hunters would vote, I have included several options. Please select the one that best describes your type of hunting. Select your vote (YES or NO) to allowing crossbow use during Archery Only Season AND the option that best suits the way that you presently hunt (Rifle only, bow only or both). For example, if you want to vote yes and you are now a Rifle Hunter Only then you would select YES, RIFLE HUNTER ONLY.

If the same question was asked in the province/territory that you lived in, how would you vote?

Not sure what all the choices mean. I think crossbow should be allowed during achery season. Also for general gun season as long as they are wearing orange.

Sorry but orange, is a retarded rule. If you cant follow safety rules, dont hunt. "know what is behind your target at all times".:slap:

I suspect what he meant was "follow all related regulations for the season", which means colors depending on the province you're hunting.

For a lot of us older geezers, a crossbow is the only way we can hunt during archery season. I used to with a compound, but shoulder problems limit me to X-bow now.I hope they think about that before making a decision.

- read first choice.
- read second choice.
- read half of third choice.
- diagonnally read all remaining choices.
- Come to conclusion that poll has too many choices.
- reply to thread about that fact
- close window, carry on with life

I say yes, in bow season.
If the crossbow and compound guys want their own season that is OK too.
Trying to make a crossbow and a compound look like different tools is goofy..
If the guys with recurves think they deserve their own season, I am all for it. But if a guy thinks that his compound is different than a crossbow he is fooling himself, compounds and crossbows belong together, same thing..
Recurve and longbow is an art, crossbow and compound is just archery by definition.

Yes...only cause alot of bow hunters throw hissy fits over it:)

We have no orange requirement here, you can wear what you want when you hunt. As it should be.

+1. Just more government meddling where it is not needed or wanted.

I got that survey and I voted yes to cross bows in the bow season.

Me too. I am a rifle hunter, so it really doesn't affect me, but if it shoots an arrow or bolt, it should be good to go in archery season. Whatever we can do to increase participation and hunter numbers is good in my books. The more of us there are, the less likely the anti-gun or hunting people will mess with us politically.

i like wearing orange in the gun hunt in southern Ontario.... can see when the pushers come through
crossbows should be allowed

The issue here is not the use of crossbows, the issue is will SRD increase the number of tags allocated to the archery season. They have already stated that they anticipate an increase in hunters and harvest and will likely put a number of species on draw vice general tag. So the issue is, more hunters, less opportunity to hunt as species are on draw. If SRD reallocates the harvest numbers, then less opportunity for the rifle hunter as more species will go to draw as a percentage of the harvest is reallocated to the archery season. Don't forget that currently in Alberta, a disabled or elderly hunter can get permission to use a crossbow during archery season.

So it is a great deal more than just what type of tool you use to hunt with in the archery season....it has everything to do what species will be on draw and the corresponding change in opportunity. I would suggest that your poll reflect that sine SRD did as well. I think the AB rifle hunters might think twice on this question if the result is more species on draw that would have been on general tag. It is a zero gain discussion. Something gives one way or another.

I do not understand the options?

Depends why the bow season was implicated in the first place. If X-bows increase the game harvest to a limit where management goals are not on target then everyone could lose a special opportunity.

I don't know what to make of your survey other than it is so bloody confusing that the results likely wouldn't mean a heck of a lot.:)

I think there is a difference between a crossbow and a bow, but don't really care either way as to which tool one uses.

I agree.

I could care less about the too used, but I voted no based on them providing one line of information on a hunter survey to make us decide an issue that has many implications.

Show me that your road map was well thought out, show me that data and then I may consider supporting it.

Emotionally people are fixating on the issue of crossbows and if they are archery tackle. The real question is what will be the impact. As a firm believer of the law of unintended consequences which this crossbow question maybe. The simple question of the inclusion, creates a change in the harvest rates which fundamentally changes the nature of hunting in the province for both archers and rifle hunters.

So who is driving the change? I don't see too many crossbow advocates in the province...
