Well, Finally!! I've been thinking about this for awhile now, and took the leap last Wed. and ordered a Savage 12 Benchrest in 6mm Norma BR. Wholesale Sports really surprised me when I got my notice in the mail today!!
I am going to top it off with a Leupold VXII,6-18X40 with target turrets. Happen to also have the Leupold base and rings for it. That will get me started.
Now to start to gather brass, bullets dies, etc. I aquired an 8 lb. container of Varget a couple of weeks ago, so that should take care of that end.
Can't wait for spring!!!.......Ken

HAHAHHA

You will love the gun and the cartridge!!! I have seem some amazing results from those Savage guns, and one local member of my ex-club has won matches with his. I am delighted to see the chambering in a factory rifle, and one that seems to shoot extremely well

Grab yourself some Sierra 107s and have them kiss the lands, and buy some 105 Berger Hunting VLD's and jam them 15 thou into the rifling. Start with 30 grains of Varget and work up in .2 grain increments.

Also, Matrix bullets makes a 107 grain that shoote very well. You can order them on-iline and they are made in Canada.

I do hate mentioning this (again) because I'm sure it makes Peter Dobson mad, and I have a ton of respect for him; his business is one of the best in Canada, but... These guns seem to hate Lapua 105 bullets. By all means try them, but don't invest in a large quantity of anything until you find a bullet that works. FYI Peter is a Lapua importer and he handles Vihtavori powders, N140 and N540 are super 6BR powders.

Thanks for the info Obtunded. I can pick up the Sierras and Bergers next time I'm in Edmonton. I will order the Lapua"s when I order the brass. I will be ordering Lapua brass also..What quantity of brass do you guys think I should pick up to start with? Also I was figuring on a set of Redding Type S Match Bushing neck die set. They have the competition seating die in them.. Opinions on that choice would also be appreciated.

There are now a couple of options for match dies - Forster and Redding. Similar concepts, different prices.

let me know if I can help with components and gear including bases, rings, scopes, etc.

Do have that action bedded. Yet to see a Savage that didn't need it.

Enjoy shooting it and let us know how it works out for you.

Jerry

PS Unless you compete, a box of 100cases will last you the life of that barrel if you take care of them. Annealing is something to consider as you will be able to fire your cases many many times.

My 6BR should be here shortly... I started with 100 Lapua brass to start. I figure I'll baby them and see how many reloads I can get through them before I buy more. Depends on how much you shoot though, right now I shoot about 1000 cf per year so they should last a while... I imagine some here shoot 10x what I do...

Get 200 or 300 pieces of brass. The Redding Type-S match Neck Die set is perfect. It gives you a neck sizing die, a body/bump die and a micrometer seater.

Now... the new lapua brass is narrower in the neck wall than the older stuff (.012")

This means you will want to pick up a titanium nitride neck bushings in .265" I would personally suggest you get one in 264 and 266 as well, just to play with neck tension.
