Hi, I just got my SKS in the mail and I am having a hard time disassembling it.
The receiver cover retaining pin wont budge. Is there a trick to this? How much force do you have to use?
The safety is on, the bolt and magazine is closed...
The gun is a beaut! if I get some free time I will post some pics.
I was attempting to follow this guide:

but just found a site where they take the trigger group out first.. recommendations?:

i had the same problem just turn it up like 30-40 degrees and wigle it
DONT FORCE IT
i started using a punch and my buddy as like what the hell are you doing
it maybe stiffmake sure your pushing the cover forward slightly to ease the tension
let me know if you have anymore problem
cheers

I always take my receiver apart before my trigger group. My pin wouldnt cooperate off the bat either, krypts right you shouldn't use a punch, but I gave mine a gentle little tap to get it the first time and it was fine after that

now the stock wont come off, in the videos i have watched it looks very easy... what can be the problems associated with this? my stock wont budge, i have taken out the trigger assembly bolt, receiving cover spring and cleaning rod.

this is a good thing, they fit nice and tight in the stock, turn it over and hold it by the upper handguard and hit the comb of the stock on your thigh a few times to loosen it up

I always have trouble with the pin holding the trigger group. Hard to bring myself to tap the punch with even a little hammer.

According the the US army SKS manual, take the bolt out first, then the gas system, then the trigger group. Works every time!

Jameskw,

Sounds like you are doing just great ... and about at the stage as me with these rifles. You are never alone. Lots of help out here .. it's a great forum.

I picked up a couple of "drill rounds" from a local gun shop just to ensure action and mags worked OK. No regrets.

Cheers and Merry Christmas,

from the Okanagan Valley.

If you lay the rifle on it's "back" with the trigger group facing up towards you, you can use a Robertson screwdriver and apply hard, even pressure, and it will pop right away. Same for re-installation. The first time I ever took mine apart, the trigger group was the hardest part, but now it's a breeze.
