Hi,
I'm going to purchase a H&K P30 in a couple on months, but don't know which caliber to choose. 9mm or .40 S&W?
Please give me your take on this so i can make a better decision.

Thanks

9mm is cheaper and recoils less, doesnt make major in some ipsc

if you reload one caliber already, buy it in that. otherwise id say 9mm, paper cant tell

I think that 9mm ammo is cheaper and more plentiful world wide. If you are/were residing outside Kanada, the 9mm would give you a larger mag capacity (otherwise it's irrelevant).

Otherwise, I can't think of any advantage over the .40.

.40 s&w was designed to have more stopping power than 9mm.

But the 9mm will make it through paper just the same, with a slightly smaller hole. ;)

Just like to share my experience...

The first pistol I bought, I decided to go with .40 because I thought it was a good compromise.. the in between of 9 and .45. I thought this was the best idea because .40 is in the middle when it comes to power and price (capacity not being an issue in stupid Canada). I really regret this decision. Personally, I feel like the reasons I initially went with .40 are now reasons I don't like .40. I now own pistols in 9, .40, and .45 (among others of course :p). I never shoot the .40. There is no point. If I'm practicing, I use 9mm because it's the cheapest. Not that we are allowed to defend ourselves in Canada but if anything was to happen, I would be reaching for the .45.

I think if you are only going to buy one pistol for the rest of your life, then .40 might still be a decent choice because it's in the middle. Otherwise, I'd just go with 9mm and .45. That's just my two cents and I can't promise you will get your money's worth.

An analogy for me is.. if you want the fuel economy of a compact car but the interior space of an SUV... so you get a station wagon because it's inbetween and now you have a car that is mediocre in both ways. I would not be happy with this but hey, there are lots of people who drive station wagons out there!

Well said Sambaru, I agree. I have 9mm and .45 also. 9mm is cheap, and if I want a bit more bang I prefer .45

Go 9mm. If you really want a .40 - get a Sig. A poly-made gun in .40 will be a lot snappier. Hey kuya, where are you? Get in on this post.

40 is a gap filling cartridge, between 9mm and big daddy 10mm!

(and you thought I'd say .45ACP.... please)

.40s&w is a direct result from bean counters not being able to shoot the 10mm well enough to make quals.

Thanks guys.
To ad to the mix. I was also thinking, "What would the better Defensive Caliber?"

With the best loads about the same with maybe a slight edge to the 40 S&W.

9mm brass is as cheap as it gets, and reloaded ammo can be had for about 80$ less per case. If you are looking at getting into IPSC production division is becoming the new standard.

Hey, I don't have a 10mm pistol... Any recommendations?

Well i'll take a different view here.... I reload so the cost difference between 9 and .40 is min. I just like a bigger bang and more snap otherwise i'd just stick to my .22. I really like .45 aswell but that costs a lot more even reloading. I like 9mm, but just seems to get a little boring sometimes. So shoot what you prefer and what feels better for you!

<<I just like a bigger bang and more snap otherwise i'd just stick to my .22>>

+2 I shoot a Glock 23 in .40 specifically because with that weight of gun it gives you a really lively shooting experience : )

Yep. Didn't the Miami FBI shootout also influence the development of the .40 S&W cartridge?

pretty sure it didint, most body armour will stop 44 magnum no problem, i think that lapd's standard issue firarms is still the 9mm beretta, but officers are free to purchase others for their own cash

that shootout gave officers different secondary firearms options, i think that the shotguns got replaced by a .223 rifles

the 40 caliber was designed as a tame 10mm cartridge after the fbi realized that due to the size, especially the length, a lot of folks could not grasp the grip of the new firearms....the 40 cal was never designed as a stop gap cartridge between the 45 and the 9mm, it just fell in place due to good advertising and lobbying by the manufacturer...

I fired a glock 17, 22 and 21, and i find the 40 cal to be the snappiest of all 3. i also find that 9mm and 45 ammo variety is plentiful and always avalilable...my local gun store is seldom stocking 40 cal, but always has 9mm and 45

a box of 9mm is about 12.99 here and a box of 40 cal is 22.99 dollars...thats 10 bucks difference....thats a lot more shooting to be done if you like plinking and practice

Id have to agree. I had two 9mms a G17 and a Beretta 92FS. Just sold the Beretta. I also have a 357 mag and a 44 mag. So i dont see the point in owning a .40 cal. My next purchase will be either a 45 or an AR-15. Im still debating. The price of a Sig 220 isnt too far off a stock Bushmaster AR-15.
