Looking to do some target shooting up to 300 yards max, and some deer/moose hunting...anyone have one? heard good or bad things? Any info would be much appreciated. The price is $1060

Cheers,
Dave

If you are ok with the weight in a hunting rifle, fly at it. Fantastic rifles, very accurate. Hunting and target type rifles are opposite in many areas of requirment such as scopes, so you will be compromising on having a gun optimized for one activity or the other. I have and have-owned several T-3s. Love them.

What sort of target shooting are you going to be doing? Plinking or competition?
I wouldn't recommend a Varmint if you plan on doing any serious hunting just because of the weight.
I have a Varmint .223 and a Lite .270 and both are awesome rifles. FWIW I think I'm getting close to having a 1/4 MOA load for the .270 as well as the .223.

If you keep an eye out in the equipment exchange you may find a nice lightly-used one and save some $$.

I don't mind the weight I know being out there all day it might change my mind after a while but the way I look at it is hunting season is only 1-2 months out of the year where I'll be going to the range for the rest, I use paper targets, I doubt I will be going into any serious competition just between friends and what not.

It's a great rifle, that's for sure. Very smooth. The heavy barrel might not be your best friend on a long hunt, but as for its shooting qualities...its great.

And weight is relative anyways. If you don't think it's "heavy", then it's not heavy.

i use my 6.55x55 tikka varmint for hunting and target shooting. it has the burris elimator lazer range scope on it. and fully loaded weighs in at 10.9 pounds with a sling.

its not an uncomfy weight but it sure works and shoots great.!

you'll be very happy with any varmint you decied to buy. i love mine!:ar15:

The Tikka varminters provide great value for the money...
You can't go wrong with the .308...mine happen to be in.223 and.260
Both provide reliable sub- MOA performance...as long as the trigger puller does his job.
I'm going to have a 'shoot off' between my .223 Tikka and my recently acquired Shilen barreled Savage varminter next week...
I might be a little miffed, but won't be surprised if the Tikka edges it out in accuracy!

Dont forget the photos for the "SHOOT OFF" your going to have between the Tikka and Savage
:D

"...the weight..." Won't matter if you hunt out of a blind.
"...300 yards max..." That's short range in DCRA shooting. The Tikka's rifling, at 1 in 11, is a bit odd for a .308, but it'll do nicely with 155 or 168 grain match bullets. Think 165 grain hunting bullets for deer or moose.
"...between the Tikka and Savage..." Certainly be interesting.

What ever you choose make sure you can hold the rifle fairly steady off hand in a standing position. Always a very good chance you will have to take a shot like that while hunting, no mater how good your intention is of shooting from a rest.
