Off to Berlin.

Very jealous of you by the way. My yearly visits back to the Fatherland disappeared with a wife and kid. But we are saving up to take them to see Munich and Berchtesgaden. My side of the family comes from Essen but the wife's comes from Munchen and Neuburg.

Mein Vater kommt aus Berlin
Say hi to my Aunts!

If you have freinds or, family there and, war history is important. You can get into "clubs" where the 'ol boys hang out, watch soccer and, of course, consume beer! Kinda like a legion (except usually not so well advertised)... My fav was peeing on a wall with a trough at the bottom! (Not too popular here!) and, buying clothes by the Kilo! (as opposed to tagged items...they weigh what you leave with!)

Christmas is a nice time to be there too! Potsdam Platz is a neat area. Honestly, if war stuff is your thing, no shortage of it but, there's LOTS of other cool things about that nation too.

You have to rent a car, if you want to see left overs of WW2 pleanty around Berlin.
As Military surplus goes Germany is way overpriced. There is a market in Poland just 1 hour from Berlin. Market is in Szczecin, Market name is in Turzyn market place impossible not to find. The guy who operates the military booth is the person who supply German WW2 Surplus dealers.

If You want to drive 2 hours from Berlin go to Kolobrzeg In Poland it is Old Festung Kolberg, It has a superb Military Museum, It is realy worth seeing plus

Military Market is based there by the army base biggest dealer in Poland, from tanks to uniforms, silencers for AK-47, military cars, cannons etc

If you see Kaiserschmarrn listed on a dessert menu you have to give it a try! It's an old Austrian dessert but can be found in the touristy parts of Berlin. Basically it's egg pancake with raisins and creme; delicious! I'd almost fly back to Berlin just to have it again.

I like shopping at Lidl

Canadian Whiskey and Scotch for Euro $4.99

$6.68 Canadian

You guys are great, thanks again for the tips!

I specialised in European and military history going through school. Thankfully the GF was a history major as well, so we'll both be looking as much into the historical aspects as we can without boring each other. When that gets tiring we'll take a walk, enjoy the sights, and head out for a drink or several later on.

We will be renting a car and I am looking forward to the autobahn, hopefully there's an unrestricted section nearby so I can drive our VW like we stole it. We were planning to head into Poland, so that milsurp market sounds like a go. Can't come back empty handed, you know. ;) I'd like to pick up a helmet or headgear of some sort... if only for the funny looks I'll get when they search my carry-on.

The Tooner said:
I expect he has already done that. He is living in Kent.

I have sampled some of the local brews, but I am still happy to report that Guiness tastes better here and is about $4.00 cdn a pint. Ditto for Stella or any 'premium' beers we pay out the rear for in Canada. I don't miss Bud, but I'd kill for a Moosehead or Kieths sometimes.

2x on the DDR Museum. Small, cheap, but interesting.
We stayed at the Berlin Marriott Hotel - amazing hotel with a slight view of the gates. Make sure you opt for the breakfast plan. Worth every penny and will keep you going until the afternoon (in a good way). This area is booming compared to the old west Berlin - although you can find good Italian restaurants there.

We stayed at the Marriott, too, great place and we looked out on the Canadian Embassy and Potsdamer Platz. It's right next to the Jewish memorial, tqo blocks from the Fuherenbunker, and a stones throw from the Brandenber Gate and the Reichstag. Short of staying on Pariser Platz it's the best location in Berlin.

I went with my wife in September to Munich for Oktoberfest, and they had a pretty cool National Socialist display at the city museum. We also checked out the Eagle's Nest and the bunker compound at Birchestgarten, which was absolutely amazing! We spent a day at Dachau which really was a sobering tour....It's one thing to read about and see this stuff on TV, but to be there and see it first hand...it was kinda sickening to be honest.

If You looking for unrestricted section of autobhan the best is west from berlin in direction of Hanover, I did 220km/h there and kept going like that for 30min, the car would not go any faster. Keep in mind it is a harsh winter there, just be safe. Remember on autobhan there is very few accidents but if it happens no need for ambulance.
Another good section to drive it towards Hamburg but it is not as straight as Hanover section.
If you go to this market in Poland don't forget the army museum there very good collection there

The V-1 site in Peenemunde is only 2 hours north of Berlin from there you are 2 hours from that market. First city in Poland after the border is on an island. After 10min ferry ride to the other side (it is free, plus to your left of the ferry you see the location of final rest place of Packet Battleship Deutchland, was sank there be singel RAF bomber) you will be in low ling forest area it is full of old ww2 fortifications a battery of costal defence 280mm cannons. Guns are gone but big bunkers are still there

Take a picture of that picture too. then post it for everyone.

Well, finally scanned it into the computer today.

Here you go:

Original Photo I took in Berlin at the excavated ruins of the old Gestapo Headquarters. (Firearms Registration in Nazi Germany)

* I will also post this in its own thread for others who may not read this post. *

I don't mean to hijack this thread. It is interesting. I liked the Charlottenburg museum too. I was there on my wife's birthday and lunch in the garden in front was pretty good too.

I love these stories about no speed limits on the German autobahns.

I was traveling with my wife, daughter and two grandchildren from Berlin to Frankfurt one time, a distance of 545 km. Travel time? Two days.

There are a variety of speed limits on autobahns depending on the location, on-ramps and off-ramps, lane reductions and sometimes just plain stops due to construction and traffic jams, particularly before and after national holidays.

In my case, we got to enjoy all of the above and had to find a place to stay for a family of five half way to Frankfurt.

Hi there,
I was stationed in Berlin from 1985 - 1988 with the British Army in Smuts Barracks in Spandau.
My memory aint great but if you have time to research address's etc then go to what was the Allied air centre which was the old Nazi courthouse where Von Stauffhausen was tried. The castle in Spandau where the conspiritors were hanged or shot.Go see what is left of Spandau prison or at least where it stood where Rudolf Hess 'stayed'.
Just a few more idea's for you.
Enjoy
TM.

I can't seem to find Spandau Prison on Google maps, but we'll be passing through on the way to Potsdam to see the Palace.

Desert Fox, that place looks like the "Topography of Terror" museum near Potsdamer Platz, we were just there but it's closed for x-mas. We'll try a little later on.

Anyways, I'm currently sitting in a Starbucks near Checkpoint Charlie, sipping on a mug of coffee, looking across the street towards an old Kremlin flag. We're off to see the Soviet War memorial in Treptower Park. Should be interesting... I've got lots of pictures so far: Wilhelm the II's uniform, Bismarck's uniform, a bunch of interesting Mauser 98 prototypes... cool stuff.

A merry Christmas to you all! Hope you're all warm!

 damn kids, you're doing it wrong...

The Einstien Cafe was way more expensive and the baristas more snobby. Plus, the folks at Starbucks speak better English, and... it's hard to find regular Coffee in Europe, especially where I live.

Well, the GF and I are back and I am in the process of uploading pics to the PC. Cool pics of Mauser prototypes, Prussian needle guns, and cool museum stuff inbound.
