Anyone use a laser sight, the type that fits on a tactical rail, on their pistol? If so do you prefer it to a red dot/holographic type of sight? Also where is a good (Canadian) shop to start looking? TC

Crimson Trace = CT = Cat Toy. Coincidence? I think not. Lasers increase engagement times and don't increase the probability of a hit. Felines love them, though.

Unless you are great with a handgun already I wouldn't put anything on it except a good set of night sights. Toys will make you weak and take away from really learning the guns 'point of aim'.

Spend that money on ammo or reloading gear but if your really set on a toy for your gun buy a surefire flashlight (without the laser)

Fun to try. The only real use I have for a laser (###zer) is to shoot pigeons out of the barn without putting holes in the roof. Otherwise, lasers are near useless. You can only see them indoor & up to 25 yds.

First of all Merry Christmas everyone! I've been shooting pistols for a while which doesn't mean I'm a great shot but I have an idea on how to aim. My main issue is eyesight. I wear bi-focals so it's either front sight or target in focus, not both. The main reason I was thinking of a laser is just convenience. I shoot mostly an XD which has a front rail but I haven't been able to find a good optical rail mount that I can remove easily. My only other option is a mount which replaces my rear sight which for me means a trip to the gunsmith each time I decide if I want to keep trying with the iron sights (for IPSC maybe) or play around with an optic. Oh well decisions, decisions! TC

If it's eye sight that's the problem I would try an Aimpoint ML3 with a 4MOA dot on a revolver. I sure love my glock but revolvers have their place too and they are way more practical when it comes to mounting optics… S&W has a nice 45acp that takes moon clips... Merry Christmas

I bought a laser recently for a small gun that is very hold sensitive with poorly regulated sights....

My experience so far is that it is a very good teaching aid for dry fire exercise and to learn the natural point of aim for instinctive shooting.

It does not work well at all in bright sunlight but inside or non bright sunny days it is easy to see.

Good learning tool for hold and trigger control.

Like I said it's good for training but not necessarly daily shooting unless you are shooting indoors.
For low light situations a laser works very well.
Obviously batteries are an issue and the device like most things can fail.

Most people recommend focusing on the front sight and letting the target blur but I tend to do the opposite.

there also comes a point in life in which the front sight blurs, and the target is also blurry- pof, i can see my front sight without my glasses, and can just barely see the horizontal bar on the target at 10-12 yards out- however with a holo-sight and my glasses, i do just fine- just like when i was 20- and yes, my dl does say proper corrective lenses- it's just that point in space about 33 inches out that i can't focus on

I have a S&W 617 22lr reveolver that I've had a devil of a time getting a base and rings for. I got a Leupold base at first but my dealer couldn't seem to get any rings for it. I took it back and we ordered a Weaver base from a different supplier. It won't be in until sometime in January so I'll hope for the best At least I have rings for this one. I'll probably go with a dot or holo sight for my XD although an Aimpoint isn't in the budget :( TC
