Have an opportunity to pick up a remington pump in 257 but have never owned or shot this cartridge. What do you guys think of it for deer etc.It is going to be hard to get components to reload

The .257 Roberts is a good varmint to deer cartridge; not a thing wrong with it and they tend to be accurate, flat shooting, and mild mannered. How easy it is to get brass probably depends on your local stores, but I believe its listed in the Cabelas and WS catalogs. I would imagine that quarter bore rifles are popular out your way, so bullets shouldn't be a problem. As a guideline for powder choices: for light bullets 4895/4064, medium weight bullets 760/4350, and for heavy bullets 4350/4831/Re-22.
 
Have a 257 Roberts Ackley IMproved - just about a 25-06 - deadly on deer and coyotes, etc. Good range in bullet types from varmint to 120 gr deer/goat load. Only thing is that i couldnt get FMJ bullets for coyote hunting so bought a .243. But realized after they are close enough that there's no point in the 243. Selling the AI now.
Wholesale had good bullets. Best thing is that it was hardly noticeable in recoil.
Good cartridge, just nobody is familiar with it.
 
I've got an older Remington 722 in 257 Roberts. It is one of the ugliest but also one of the most accurate rifles I own. It will shoot 1/2 moa all day with 100gr Hornady bullets over 46gr of H 4831. I have taken a couple of deer with it and had no problems at all. It's mostly a range gun, 'cause I hunt almost exclusively with my 375 RUM. I do love this caliber though, and it's easy to find components for (at least out here), cheap to reload, and the recoil is mild. I will be having another Roberts built in the future, I'm just not sure what action I want to start with. I have never used one in a pump gun, but I would buy it if the price is right.
 
re value just checked gun broker completed sold listing found 3 one sold for $656.00 one for $511.00 and one for $450.00 so don't spend big money thinking you are going to retire on this find if you get it it for $300. $400 good deal and for all you guys that still think it is worth big bucks I have one I will gladly sell it for $1k pm me if interested

I'm sorry I should have been clearer. That is a limited run on gunbroker they did just in the US I think in 2009 or maybe 2010 of some 7600 ( could not find one in canada anywhere ), this is a totally different animal it is a mint 1960 or 61 760 with 5 diamond wood.
Like comparing a 870 express to a wingmaster. This one is in the 1200 range and worth every penny. Just have to find cash since I just bought a 7mm-08 last week.
 
I also have one that is 98% original condition and would not sell it for 1K. FYI: Ellwood Epps used to say "If a man in Ontario could only own 1 rifle then it should be a 257 Roberts."

Hey struff55. I will gladly give you $400 for yours.

Theres on on broker now @ $655 with three days left.It will go over $1000. The American market, and Canadian market are two different things. The 760 in 257, are far more rare in canada ,thus worth more. I know.......I sold a 257 in good condition with diamond pattern stocks for $1300 a few years back.

Grice wholesale is the ones who do those runs.

I have a few of them. 257,260Rem,7-08Rem,two 25-06, and a 280 Rem aniversery. Nice stuff.

Girce has a run of 25-06, and 7mm-08 in cool blue laminated right now.They are also doing a run of carbines in 35 Whelen come August that i am getting in on. I sent in a request to Grice for a run in 358 win, and they said if there is enough interest they will do that also.
 
Mr captonion apperently you have to read my post again regariding value it will not go over a$1k when they are all over the sold lising for $400-800.

Like I said I sold mine for $1300 a few years back

How many have you seen in your lifetime? They arent at all common in Canada.

I have 760s in both 222, and 223. and I know I can get $3000 for the 223.

What a nice collection. I am am old remington wingmaster guy so loved the 760/7600 pumps also. Unfortunately 6 years ago I had quite a cancer scare and sold off all my rifles after being told I would no longer need them. Good news is I am still kicking and so decided to start building them back up but know I will never have what I sold off. I seen that 25-06 in blue lam real cool. Is your 280 the one with the bullet scrolled on the side. I had one of them. The 280 I have now has a bear hunting scene on it which is not something I remember seeing before.
Did you pick up any of the maple stock ones?? they were cool.I know some 270 and 3006 came to canada
I still have two brothers living in the US but have never seen what was involved in buying a gun from them. I may have to look into that since they buy all the time off gunbroker. Take care and thanks for sharing, not many of us pump collectors out there

It's strange the 222 was made only 4 years 58-61 and I know where there is three , now 4 counting yours but I have never seen a 223 and they were made 5 years 64-68. ( not counting any special runs)
Some rare guns there my friend.

I got the 223 with original box, and all the paperwork. No blueing, or wood blemishes. 98% i would say.

The 257 Rbts. is a pleasant round to shoot with. Ned Roberts based his 257 on the standard 7x57 Mauser case to hold .257" bullets. First rifles made in this caliber were by Nieder Rifle Co. around 1928 as well as Griffin & Howe.

In 1934, Remington introduced a standarized version by altering the shoulder angle slightly to facilitate factory production. In 1934 Remington chambered the model 30-S bolt action rifle for the new round. Winchester began chambering for the 257 Rbts. in 1937 when the new Model 70 was introduced.

I've had two pre-64 M70's in this round and found them a pure pleasure to shoot. The first one I bought from a fellow CGN and sold it after I stumbled on a pristine example of the same. The latest one is a keeper.
 
One of the finest deer/varmint/hunting cartridges made. Grab it.

The .257 Roberts was based on the 7x57 Mauser case, and the .244/6mm Remington was an offshoot of that. As far as components go, the .257 bullets are common, and brass can be obtained as it is still produced. You can also make your own cases out of 6mm Remington, 7x57 Mauser or even 8x57 Mauser if needed.

The .257 Roberts is a bit more versatile than the .243/6mm calibre as it has the ability to take a bit heavier bullets in the 117-120 range for the larger game animals.

It also makes a very accurate, light recoiling rifle. WARNING : If you have a wife or girlfriend, I would not let them fire it. If you do, you might find that they will appropriate it, and you will then NOT have a .257 Roberts, but they will though.

I am currently loading a 250-3000 Savage which basically uses a 308 case necked down to 257 and it is a delight to shoot. Still working up loads for it but it is almost as light as my 223. Looking forward for this one. Perfect rifle for deer especially the small island deer on the coast.
