Coyote Calling

Well I was looking at my old Johnny W?? something unit ( tape deck with a horn style speaker on a wire plus 18 tapes ) which is almost 20 years old caller today and I think the time has come to buy something new.
Don't want a $600.00 one just something that will do the job and may have a remote.
What are you guys using today and what are you using for motion or decoys. Thanks in advance for the feedback

Foxpro Spitfire is their cheapest model with a remote, iirc. I am still using the older FX3 in combination with a Mojo Critter decoy.

I guess that I am a bit old fashioned as I use hand held calls. I am switching too though as they can be hard on the ole ears. Foxpro is the way to go from what I have read elsewhere.

Never used anything but hand calls, and reeds. Can't imagine the awkwardness of carrying electronic contraptions afield, especially when a little tube the size of a fat cigar will work even better, as it can be "tuned" to the situation.

Yup. My sentiments exactly.

Check out the mojo critter it's a cool decoy. Also don't let these people tell you an e caller is such a burden to carry because they are not.

An e-caller like a Foxpro is not really a 'burden' as such but I will acknowledge that it is certainly one more thing to carry (which can be annoying on long walks), along with the remote and fresh batteries. Its just another 'tool' in the toolbox and a good set of hand calls used with skill and experience can be just as good or better.

I agree that hand calls are hard on the ears. Electronic calls offer different advantages over hand calls. But to each his own. I know that hand calls work as I and others have put 100 plus yotes a year on the stretcher with hand calls.

I use Sceery Mouth Calls (Cottontail Distress, Variable Reed, Variable Rodent, and Rodent Squeaker), Foxpro Fury, and Johnny Stewart PM-4. I have used the Foxpro 416b and Knight and Hale Mouth Calls. The best working call to date for me is the PM-4 I haven't really used the Fury much yet and I am sure it will score me a coyote soon.

I'm trying a cheap homemade rig. Got an mp3 player, some powered speakers, (computer speakers) and a 100' of wire. Not as neat and compact as a commercial rig, but a whole lot cheaper. Oh, and as for the calls, I downloaded them. I was trying the hurt pup call in the basement last night and it drove my little pooch nuts. Today she is still go up the basement stairs and looking down them as if there is a dying pup down there.

I use a variety of hand calls and most are hand made calls from various makers. There are a lot of good calls on the market these days from the big names. One thing for sure in my opinion, stay away from closed reed calls during the winter as they freeze up and will leave you frusterated. Open reed calls are the way to go. As well, you can get more volume out of an open reed call.

As for volume needed it depends on a lot of things, terrain probably being the biggest factor. I call louder on the prairies than I do in the parkland or smaller areas. I tend to call softer at the beginning in case there is a predator in the immediate area and then work my volume levels up later in the call set. More volumes isn't always better. E callers can be loud.

E callers are a great asset and have their place. They do take some of the focus away from the shooter however they are not a foolproof plan. I have resisted using one for many years however I growing towards them. I am partial to Foxpro but then again, I have hunted with a lot of their staff and was SHOT show with them last year.
