Hello all and happy holidays.
My father asked me to clean his 870 express after deer season and I noticed
very slight surface rust under the vent rib. Because of the blasted finish on the express, I'm not sure how to go about getting it off. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Waiting for the "you should have got a Wingmaster" comment....

More like the "you should have got anything except an 870 express" comment.

Well I do admit the older models are great and the actions on some of the 870's are silky smooth, the express is a paper weight of a gun.

Definitely not one to pass down through the ages.

I do not think the "newer" Express model is complete garbage that never works...I also on the other hand do not believe a Glock or GLOCK was a gift sent down from god himself...gotta love CGN at times :)

WD40 or other penetrating oil is your friend as has been mentioned. Just needs a little more TLC (aka gun oil) when it comes back from the hunt from now on to avoid it.

What have g LOCKS have to do with rust prone express guns and who said that god was a him?

All I ment from that is I take everything I read on CGN with a grain of salt...according to a VAST majority of CGNers a GLOCK is solid gold and if you say something bad about it (because according to them thats impossible)...tons with rush to its defense and even stoop to belitting you because you don't like "their" fav gun. was just trying to make a point.

To me the newer Express is what it is...a $400 shotgun. It works and will go boom everytime and is not a show stopper but when has that ever REALLY mattered? It can rust easier then most guns without proper care but how hard is it spending an extra 2 mins cleaning it after use and before you store it away for an extended period of time? The gun isn't super smooth like the guns you pay 2x or more are but with use and some basic knowledge you and work you can make it quite a bit better.

The toothbrush and oil worked like a charm. Thanks to all who offered advice.
My father will get a lecture on gun care this afternoon.

Wipe them after every trip or handling and you will have no problems. I keep a cloth soaked in gun oil in a zip lock bag right next to the gun vault, every time I handle them even they get a wipe going back in. take care-

I have lots of them WM and they will rust there also as does the brownings BPS.Just have to keep a close eye on it and clean & oil, clean & oil

You know its funny cause I always hear about expresses rusting out and stuff but, I have kept an 870 in my truck for the last 5 months. I cleaned and oiled it lightly before putting under the back seat and have only brought it out a few times. In that time it has not accumulated even a speck of rust. I just pulled it out a few days ago since i was leaving the country and wanted to put it in the safe but before i put it away I gave it a look over and then another light oiling jsut to make sure and still no rust.

Now the funny part is that about a week ago a friend and I were heading up to the range and i put my 10 22 and cooey 84 in the truck to take with us. We didn't end up going and just did a bit of errand running instead but i forgot to take the two guns out of the truck when we got home. Anyways two days later when I finally pulled them out they were both covered in surface rust  Anywho, a good cleaning and oiling took care of it and they are fine now but i was shocked. Just thought it was amusing that the old 870 didnt show any signs of of giving up but the two that had been in the same condition for 2 days crapped out so fast.

And to the OP sorry for the slight de rail, I would go with the toothbrush oil and elbowgrease technique.

The 870 express's finnish or lack of just premotes paint schemes. You could buy a nighthawk model for the price of four, but everybody loves that " what happened to your shotgun?" question when hunting during monsoon season in BC. When your old shotty looks like it was salvaged off the deck of the Titantic. The better finnishes will give you an hour or two more still requiring some efforts in cleaning. For the original op I suggest WD 40 spray down followed by brake clean. Pipe cleaners, tooth brushes, brass brushes and steel wool will make short work of the rust.
