It's been a whirlwind couple of months around here, but, with the passing of Christmas things have begun to calm... That and the squeeze of a trigger that finally ended my fall of hunting a couple of weeks ago...

So, I got to thinking some of you might enjoy a few photos from our fall. Hope you all enjoy.:)

Me and a buddy started for real in late Oct./early Nov. hunting from horseback for sheep but,but mostly looking for a cow elk to fill a draw tag...

At the trailhead:

Dinner @ first camp:

The 'cabin':

The view between the ears of a horse is easy to get used too:

Snack time for the hay burners:

We went out twice for 4 days and nights with horses looking for elk... no luck. Tons of fun though. Lots of critters, just no elk that worked out...

The view of a days end:

This was a damp, icy morning:

The meat makers- for the gunnutz amongst us;):

That would end our horse trips, lots of hiking miles were put on after that...
The Locals:

Chilling out after a blown stalk:

In the big timber:

Myself and my boys, little troopers put on lots of miles with me this year:):

Helped my neighbour get his first big game animal ever, made him tag and gut it himself, he was pretty proud of that little buck:cool::

Shortly after we had a real cold snap. -33C plus wind, to cold to work... so let's go hunting!! I pulled my oldest out of school for his first ever day of 'hooky' and we were off to try fill a Antlerless MD draw I had. The pressure of an empty freezer was starting to get to me...:p We hiked all morning and then just as we got in the truck to go for lunch at a nearby town... I spotted a small group of does...

Icy eye lashes, 5 minutes in. It's chilly out here!:

Two hours later and it's still frickin' chilly! Good times though...:

On the run to 'his' first deer:cool::

That was a really great day for me. First time we'd been successful hunting together... gophers don't count.;)

The next weekend we hit the hills again. Still trying to fill the cow elk tag. A friend joined us for this trek... Thank God- he's half draft horse... We ended up with a cow down 5ish klicks back. We took the kids home and went back to haul it out in a calf sled... got it to the truck at 300... I fell into bed at 730 the next morning. 27 hours without sleep- hunting, hiking, pulling. It woulda been a lot better to fill that tag when we had the horses...:D
Myself and Jon 'The Draft horse' K, a true friend:

All critters killed in these stories were harmed with my boring old LH SS Ruger M77MII in 3006 shooting 180 Feds:):

So, that's the Reader's Digest version of our incredible hunting season... hope some of you enjoyed it... CANNOT wait till next year!:D

Great pics and story David! I saw them earlier but it is better with the play by play ;)

Next time you kill an elk down there and don't call for help I will be pissed :p. You could have left the kids with the wife at the ranch in a nice warm bed and I could have loaded up the trailer and horse to come help out. You know me, I never sleep and I'm always up for an adventure .

Keep up the good work getting those boys out there showing them what it is all about! There are times where they might not enjoy the long days now, but later on in life the pay off will be huge, for both you and them. I'm sure glad my father did those things with me and still does...

Cheers!

Ha! You got the extended version with commentary to follow...;)

Believe me! Next time I find myself in that spot your threats, eeerr, kind offers will NOT be forgotten...;) Very much appreciated, for sure.

I do love getting out with the boys. It definitely takes a shift in priorities though. I try to concentrate on their comfort, interest and enjoyment... If they decide not to hunt when they are grown, that's OK, just don't want it to be cause I ruined it for them. I'd love for them to still be wandering the hills with me years from now, just like you and your dad... That said though, they do get worked hard from time to time.:D

Hey David,

Great pics and a nice story with it too. Those kids are real troopers. Not many would venture out in those frosty days. My knees feel weak just thinking of packing out that elk all night. Now I know who to call to drag out a Ram.

Thanks for posting!

Wow! Unbelievable perfect way to start my day reading your thread. 10/10 I can't even find the words to describe how happy it made me reading through and looking at the pics. Love the great outdoors and you brought your little kids to, I bet they will always remember this and eventually do it with their kids as well one day. Congratulations on your kills and more so the experience :) Cheers!

wish i was there with you guys . any big bulls seen DUTCH
Nothin' real big, Dutch. Hopefully next year, as I more than likely won't have a cow tag in my pocket...

Hey Noel!

My knees were definitely shaking. Took a few days to fully recover, for sure. Prolly good to start with a young cow as next years goal will be a nice bull like yours...:D

I'm over it now though and will gladly 'pack mule' for you anytime...;)

Glad you enjoyed it, buddy!

Thanks for sharing.Beautiful huntin country you have there.

Thanks guys! We are definitely blessed to be able to hunt here...

I'd be lying if I said I don't want my kids to have the same passion for the outdoors that I do, Zokakoka. Hopefully... time will tell.:)

Hey David .....

Thanks for the great pics. The boys will remember the time together forever. The horseback hunt looks like an esp. good time.

Safe and Blessed Holidays to all.
