I ordered a Rem 260 the other day and was talking to a buddy of mine that thought I had made a mistake and that I should have got the 7-08 he thought it was a better caliber because of the better bullet selection in terms of weights.I dont think it makes much difference in the two calibers to me as I will only use one weight of bullet likely anyways, but it did get me thinking should I have picked one over the other.
Help me come up with a good argument why I should stay with the 260, because I know I have not heard the end of it with him.

What are you going to use it for?For coyote, pronghorn and deer,I prefer the 260,but for elk and moose,I prefer the 7mm-08.

Deer mostly but coyotes as well.If the opportunity comes up and I am packing the 260 it will be used on moose or elk size critters.
I have 7mm mag that I will use for larger game if that is specifically what I am after

If you have a 7 mag then the .260 is a good one for you. The difference between the the .260 and 7-08 is not huge. There are great 6.5 bullets available for what ever you want to point it at. I'm using 120 TSX in mine but the 130 Accubond is a good bullet also. I used it in my 6.5-06 and it worked great this last season.

I just went through the exact same thought process that you did. I was thinking I wanted a 6.5x55 or 260 and was pretty much set on it, then I realized that the only real difference between the 260 and the 7/08 is 0.5 mm diameter. ballistically speaking they are almost identical, with the 7/08 able to throw a 140 gr about 100-200fps faster. Nothing will be able to tell the difference. I picked up a 7/08 just because a good deal came up. I also have a 300 win mag for the heavier stuff but like the 7/08 because if it's in my hand I will be confident to take a moose with a good shot.
Personally if I were you I would have got the 7/08 just for the ease of reloading, keep it consistent with one calibre. That way you can use the same bullets in the 7/08 and the 7RM
What model rifle did you get?

.260 Rem all the way. I'm still shocked with how well my 7 pound Model 7 SS shoots and recoils with every weight of bullet and powder charge I've tried in it so far (95 grain, 120, 140 grain boolits). 120's recoil like a dream and I sure as hell wouldn't volunteer to catch them at any distance...

Rem model 7 synthetic, should have it by the summer

I've owned HUNDREDS of rifles but the one I'll keep forever, and the one I shoot a coupke of deer with every year is my Rem 700 SSDMBDL. 7-08 is fine but for deer and coyotes you'll not go wrong with a 260. If you want a bigger gun for bigger game a 7-08 wouldn't be what you need anyway.

A 7Mag for moose and 260 for deer is a perfect combo! Tell your buddy to join CGN. ;)

.260 is fine for anything in Canada , aside from large bear. Quality bullet's and you are off to the races. The Swift Scirocoos 130's have a huge BC and are a bonded bullet.Perfect for damn near anything you want to shoot.
The Europeans have been using that caliber on moose for years.Remember todays technology in powder and bullets is amazing.

You'll likely out shoot your 7 mm Mag for accuracy quite easily.

Don't second guess your choice.

The difference between the two is trifling and isn't worth huge discussions or regrets either way. This reminds me of the .270/.280 debates or if you want to go even further back the .30-30 vs. .32 special discussions of years yonder; same case and minute differences in diameter doing virtually the same thing once it hits game. Shoot where it counts and carry a good sharp knife, sharpener & saw because the work will begin.

Time to buy some dies and lay up some brass in reserve. The old bullet selection comment in favour of the 7mm doesn't hold much water. There's lots of 6.5 bullets out there.

split the difference and get the 6.5 creedmore. Seriously though the advantage of the 7-08 over the 260 is if you handload you already have 7mm bullets for the mag. Other than that they are both excellent cartridges.

Having had two rifles in the same cartridge (twice) I see the same problem now in duplicating calibres. I could have gone to a .270 Winchester except for the minimal spread on the .270 and the .280. That is why my next one is going to be a .260 Remington. I was thinking of a 6.5 x 55 but a short action came available first. Of course I could have converted the .30-06 into a 6.5 x 55 except for suffering any wrath from my son who seems to think the ought six is his.

A 7mm-08 would be redundant as hell if you already have a 7mm RM. Stick with the .260!!!

Oh and about them 6.5mm pills shooting well....guy's are right...

Not sure if I posted these groups or not...this is just some load workup using 95 grn VMax's and H4350 powder.

I am in the same boar as the original poster. I am building a custom Model 7 (the reason I am building is I am LH and it doesn't come in LH) I am still trying to decide on caliber.
I have a 308 RH Model 7 and a Custom 700 Rem 700 7 Rem Mag. (also a 270, 22-250, 338, and 375 H&H) So now I am trying to decide on the cal for this new build.

I am not familiar with the 260 nor do I know anyone that shoots that caliber. So aside from is being better than 7-08 what is the attraction?

Is it a 7mm Rem Mag but with less range? I have to order a barrel this coming month (January). The design criteria is that it is to be a light weight deer only rifle. So please tell me why it is so good?

Pros: you have a 7mm Rem Mag, the 7mm-08 will use the same bullet diameter.

Other than that,
keep in mind, 243, 260,7mm-08, 308 are ALL the same case,
the only difference is the bullet diameter.
The 260 is an awesome caliber
I already have a 25-06 and a 7mm-08, and there Both Excellent caliber, in my mind,
the 260 is between those 2.
You have the best of both,
great choice !

Well from the selection of calibers you have it looks like you everything covered from little furry critters to great big hairy ones, so I dought you NEED another but I do get that you want another.
As far as the 7-08 being better well if it is ,it sure isnt by much from reading the responses to this thread some one said it well that the SD and BC appear to be slightly better. It is a short action caliber, accurate and light recoil ideal for a light rifle build and I am sure they use it for long range shooting for good reason, last but not least it has good degree of cool factor to me.
