can someone give me some input/experience of this gun? im looking for common problems, engineering problems, stuff breaking?

i am considering getting one but want some input from someone who has been there shot that.

I own one and have shot a few others, I have never had a complaint about them. The pump is a farther reach than most other brands, so if you're 4 feet tall it might make a difference. They don't have the smoothest action, but again, no complaints. In my opinion, it's a good gun for the price. I would buy another one without hesitation.
 
There is no design flaws, or problems!

It is a Mossberg 500 in almost every way. In fact some of the new 500's even have the one piece plastic forend as well, which was really the only complaint some had about the Maverick 88.

The only other real difference is the safety is a cross bolt in front of the trigger, whereas the Mossberg is a tang safety on top of the receiver. For me this is actually better on the 88 as I use a pistol grip alot which would make using the tang safety on the 500 near impossible!

I have owned mine for almost 3 years, and have 3 different barrels for it. It accepts any Mossberg 500 barrel and I have the 28 inch vent ribbed barrel with removable chokes, the 18 inch smoothbore, and a 24 inch deer barrel! It has seen thousands of rounds of all kinds and has been 100% reliable!

The only reason I would say buy the Mossberg is that if you plan on using it for multiple purposes like I do, and want the other barrels, you will get a better deal going with a Mossberg 3 barrel combo than if you buy the Maverick 88 and all the barrels seperately.

I went with the maverick because I started out only shooting at the range and was more into tactical stuff, so the 18 inch barrel and crossbolt safety was better for adding a pistol grip, for range fun and backpacking stuff.

I then got into trap so bought the 28 inch vent ribbed barrel, and then started hunting this year so had to buy the deer barrel as well.

Buy with confidence, if you do choose the Maverick 88! I beat the #### outta it and don't worry about it at all, and it is nice to just be able to not worry about a gun. It is strictly a tool, but one that works very well, and is a great deal!

It is not that the slide is actually travelling farther away it is simply the design of the forend. The mossberg one piece plastic forend has an extension that comes back towards the reciever making it esier to grip without reaching.

Also the mossberg stock is slightly shorter than the Maverick from comparing my Maverick to a buddies Mossberg. It is very easy however to just chop off a quarter to half an inch off the stock, with a hacksaw. The recoil pad will fit back on without looking to bad either. I did it for goose hunting as it was hard shouldering the gun while dressed up in a thick coat.

Only the deer hunting model, with the slug barrel.

The Maverick comes in a few configurations though so it will depend.

There is an 18 inch, and 20 inch security model.

There is the field model with the 28 inch vent ribbed barrel.

There is also a Deer hunting model with a 24 inch ported deer barrel.

As I said before any Mossberg barrel will fit any model.(except the 20 inch security as it has a longer mag tube)
 
Got the Security version for Christmas, put a couple boxes of 00 Buck down range, no complaints what so ever, for what it is you can't go wrong. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but then again I'm one who likes simplicity. But bottom line, if you are looking for an inexpensive shotgun, you can't go wrong with this one.
 
Santa left one under this year. I have only taken it out once but it seems great, especially for the price.
 
I will chime in too. I have one. No complaints. For some reason it fits me perfect! (must be my monkey arms lol). An easy trick to slicken up the action is to strip down the action and polish up the sharp corners on the lifter and the action bars. Just take the sharpness off the parts with some scotch-brite or fine sandpaper, oil it up and giver!
 
The only other pump for about the same $ is the H&R Pardner. It also gets good reviews. Not sure where it's made though. I believe the Maverick is still made in the USA.
 
Most of the action of the 88 is the same as the 500. The safety is a cross bolt, which isn't quite as handy as the tang safety. The bead is mounted directly on the barrel which results in shooting high, but this failure applies to the various 500 bead sighted barrels as well. The stock is on the cheap side and the LOP is on the long side unless you are particularly long and lanky. Finally the action is not as slick as the 500s, although polishing should fix that up. Pretty hard to beat the price if you are looking for a tough hard use gun, but I would hold out for the slightly more expensive 500.

OK that's interesting. the reason I asked for problems was a friend, who had one with no problems, mentioned that the pins in the for end are known to fail and it was a difficult fix. So I wanted some more input.

Great gun at a great price. Mine has never given me an issue and has out-shined my 870 that cost almost twice as much.

How would shooting magnum slugs affect the forend any different than regular slugs?

Regardless I have put lots of slugs from 2 3/4 to 3 inch magnums, as well as lots of buckshot loads through mine without a hitch.

What exactly broke?

Was it the metal coming off of the plastic. This is the only thing I can see happening.
 
Mavericks are Mossberg's 'entry level' brand of shotguns. Literally a lower end M500. Uses the same barrels, etc. Except for the warrantee. The 500's is a limited(defects in material or manufacture) 10 year warrantee. The Maverick's is only 1 year.
 
had one for 2 years, shoot about 500 target loads though it. No Problems. For the money highly recommend
