Varmints and Paper on a budget???

I would go with a Savage that has the Target Action. The design is solid and easily upgradeable, with their barrel nut system. You can get barrels that are drop in from the likes of Pac-Nor that need no gunsmith to install. Here are three consecutive three shot groups out of my LRPV in 6BR. I really do not think Tikka or Remington are likely to match that out of the box.

Thats exactly what I'm homing in on 12F LRPV .223.

Remington SPS Varmint or Tikka T3 Lite. Whichever one feels better to you thats my 2 cents.

.204 for hunting. .223 for target shooting and hunting.

I do have a Savage 10 PC .223 that I really like too....

Have you looked at the Savage 25? Available in both .223 and .204. The wood stock may not match the practicality of some others mentioned... But it is a very fine looking/shooting rifle.

Bore life with a 204R can be very short.

I own a Savage LE 10FCPk in .223
I love that gun and the caliber is so fun to shoot.

But i wouldn't have any problem shooting the .204Ruger in a good gun.

Well yesterday I went to the gun store and after handling a lot of guns, I bought the T3 Varmint in .223, and yes I got it for $795, I think I did OK.

I'm going to learn to shoot this gun accurately while slowly building another from a Savage action up, the T3 Varmint felt great in my hands, has an acceptable trigger, a good 1:8 barrel (I hope!) and was, I think, great value for my money.

I will slowly build myself another riflr purely for target shooting, but it seems to me, the more I researched, that, pure precison rifles are not that practical for hunting with, so the T3 will hopefully be a good compromise for now .

PS I bought some Hornady 75 grain BTHP Match ammo to start sighting with - is this OK to start?

I've been following your thread because I haven't bought a rifle since I was knee-high to a grasshopper (a big grasshopper, but nonetheless) and had many of the same choices/questions.

I ended up with a deal on a .223 5r from Prophet River (thanks Clay!) that I'm overjoyed with, but I'd say you did better than OK for $795!

If you have the 1:8 twist , you got a good ammo to begin with. ( 75-80 grainers for that twist ).The .223 is real fun to shoot. You won't regret it.

You won't regret your purchase. .223 can do it all...varmints and targets without breaking a sweat!
I'm off to the range tomorrow to do a back to back comparison of my Tikka Varminter and my recently acquired Savage LRPV 'upgraded' with a Shilen select match barrel, both in .223.
By the way, William's Arms is a first rate place to deal with...some great bargains can be had.
I picked up a Tikka Varminter in .260Rem from there, and it has got to be my favourite rifle.

Looks like you got yourself a great rifle & i believe that those 75 gr pills should work quite well.

If you are looking to reload i have had alot of luck with Sierra 69 & 77 Match King bullets, Bench Rest Primers & 25.8 gr Varget.

I'm off to the range tomorrow to do a back to back comparison of my Tikka Varminter and my recently acquired Savage LRPV 'upgraded' with a Shilen select match barrel, both in .223.

I am very interested to hear how your Savage turns out with the upgraded barrel. I am still trying to "burn out" the factory barrel on mine before having the Shilen installed.

There must be a bunch of us shooting shilen 223 barrels that could swap load info, what works, what does'nt. I thought everybody and their dog shoot a savage 223 on gunnutz. I don't think I have seen a specific thread but I'm super interested.

I know, I know - I'll probably still build the target gun around a Savage target action and a Shilling barrel, but for know I'm looking forward to whacking some long I think it will be a hot one!
