Mosin Nagant 91/30 Q's

I've read that the M91/30 is really long, but I thought that when using irons, the long sight radius and 28" barrel would make aiming easier and more accurate due to the barrel length. What realistic ranges would the 91/30 be good for using stock iron sights? 100-150 yrds?

How about the M44? Is the M44 more collectible btw?

Would you guys recommend the 91/30 or M44 for overall range/hunting?

I went hunting all last fall with my M91/30. I had no problems to shoot up to 200 yards with iron sights. I bring small binoculars have a better look at the animal before I choose shoot it. Its a rouged rifle that works really well in the cold and elements.

Beside the original russian, the M44 have many flavours , East german issue,Romania,Hungary,China(type 53),Poland. Polish M44 can be found brand new, unissued sometimes and the finish is exceptionnal:)

I have a Polish M44, like new condition, I use for Moose. Our area is heavy brush, 50-100yrds, so I wanted a short bush gun for carrying. I worked on a .303 -180grain bullet handload, and got it shooting really well. Bayonet has to be extended though for best accuracy. I would like to try a 91/30 someday.

I got a hex receiver from Tradex. It has a 1928 receiver and has been rebuilt to 91/30 standard. The barrel is perfect, possibly new. All numbers match, the stock appears to be new. I suspect this is a new rifle built around an old action. I bought the hex receiver because it was made at a time when the machining was done much more carefully than on the wartime round receiver models.

I couldn't be happier with the deal I got. I bought it as a shooter, not as a collector.

Are the Hex receiver MN's usually overall better condition than the round receiver ones? Or it purely cosmetic? Some say Hex doesn't affect accuracy, but seeing that they are more sought after and the Finns used them over the round receivers... does that make them better?

The cond is the same. However, the finish on wartime round receiver can be more rough. Has for accuracy, the M91/30 PU sniper are round receiver and accuracy is very good. I think the Finns use the hex because of the very huge amount of Mosin Nagant captured after ww1,they had enough for their needs.

my fav is my 1943 m91/30 izzy its reciever is very very rough and is a ukranian refurb .makes me think of enemy at the gates .she is good out to 300 meters no problem after that its minute of sawblade out to 600 but thats me.my nicest is my polish m44 wasnt issued i dont shoot it i want to keep it nicelastly my belgium b barrel m39 will outshoot most scoped hunting rigs with open sites.as for rnd or hex its personal pref ive never noticed a difference

Carbines only this morning - long rifles are at the farm so no 91/30. Since you mentioned hunting, the bottom Mosin is the milsurp rifle I hunted with most this fall. Sorry for the crappy pic, SKS and k98 for scale. Came from P&S Militaria last year. 1943 Izzy M38, post war M44 stock, counter-bored. The recoil pad is current stock from Tradeex and goes over the butt plate using the OEM screws. Cushy ;)

I used Prvi Partizan SP as I was too lazy to roll up any fancy stuff this year. Fired x5 to get sighted in, and shoots about 2.5" off the bench @ 100m. Did the job you'd expect on a Doe.

Personally, I find the 91/30 and SVT-40 way too long for humping in the bush. Both excellent iron sight options from a tree stand tho.

And at the range, you'll like the 91/30. It comes and goes in the truck anyway right? So extra few inches are no biggie. When you know enough to appreciate the difference, treat yourself to a Finn.

Not bad - It was a "duffle cut" vet bring back, and the bore looks the part. I haven't done any load development for it, but I only shoot cast lead through it now. 3" is about average. It tightens up some with copper jacket bullets, but I'm trying to make the rifling last as long as I can. Neat rifle. My favorite Mauser and my first acquisition on the EE. (Thanks again Pete).

I like them both and don't mind to hump them in the bush. I never truck hunt because I don't see what I want to see, animals or sign. I have no problems making 10 -20 K per day with my full size Mosin or SVT. ( no i'm not an athlete or 250 pounds. I'm 170 pounds and i smoke, drink, and have most of the other bad habits).

If the 7.62x54R cartridge is still being used, howcome we don't get newer surplus? And is the stuff they use now still corrosive?

I saw your picture in the hunting rigs post - nice deer. It's definitely a matter of personal preference. Me? I'm ALWAYS getting tangled up. If there's something to trip on, get caught in or knocked in the head by - I'll find it. Got almost exactly 100 lbs on you tho, and I bet a few inches...

I carried a 99 in 300 Savage until I couldn't find ammo anymore. The military rifles were only supposed to be a temporary measure until I got reloading - After looking at the rifle and the dies for 5 years I sold the 99 and never looked back.

I want one of those No4s in 45-70. Preferably in a "tanker" set up.

Have you had a chance to shoot her yet? Do you have pictures?
