My next rifle is going to be a proper military style piece & I am looking at an M14 Norinco from Marstar, vs an SKS or a Springfield...

I want it for iron sight target shooting, plus some paper punching, hunting or whatever.

What is the best deal on a M1A style rifle in Canada? I've been looking at the Norinco M14s/M-305 from Marstar, or the same one from Wolverine. Are there any other dealers that carry them?

Happy New Years!

I myself want to buy a M1a Springfield Supermatch, or a high-end M14 that is good for target shooting. I just can't seem to find one anywhere. I hear springfield is like a year behind in shipping anything to canada. Any ideas?

I had the norico and it worked flawless and shot better than expected ,with all the stuff you can buy for it and the m14 doc clinics I might need another one

buy a norc m14, go to one of hungry's clinics, and spend the rest of the money that you would have spent on a springfield, on ammo or reloading equipment to feed it.

there aint nothing a 500 dollar norc cant do, that a 2000 dollar springfield can.

it all depends on how you define "good"- springfields are WAYYYY overpriced and overrated- just ask any of the gurus here- almost universally, you'll get an answer of "buy a norc and modify" before you'll be told to buy springfield-if you define good for target as being precise, you're far better off with a bolt and scope than ANYTHING on the 14 platform, unless you WANT to fiddle - then the 14 is WONDERFUL- it took me roughly 5 YEARS to get the LOAD DEVELOPMENT to where i wanted it- that meant quarter sized groups at 100 yards off the bench, using a 4x12 scope and a harris bipod- and it wasn't all upward, either- some of those loads were too hard on the action and i had to step back a bit- if i had to do it again, i'd go the norc route, and get m14 doctor to either build one from the ground up, or send him a new norc and be PREPARED TO PAY for it- that MEANS LOTS of cash -

I know bolt actions are the most precise way to go, but that is not what I want. I have a very accurate bolt action but now I want to fiddle with the M14 to make it more precise. I love the look of the m14 and I love semi-autos.

I have a m14 heavy krieger barrel on the way. I was thinking of buying a Norinco and having the krieger put on right away. I also have a sadlak coated piston and plan on getting a sadlak scope mount. What else should I get to tune the Norinco? I don't hand load yet, but that will happen soon.

+1 :sniper:

read all the STICKIES as posted here if you can't get to one of the clinics or send the rifle out- probably one of hungry's would be feasible for you, given your location- some mods work, and tighten your groups, some don't- the unitized piston thing did NOTHING for me- however, changing the op-rod did- ,likewise, neither did i find the extended mag release of any use at all, and increased the "clumsyness" of the riflle- there's a HOST of mods out there- you need to assess each one according you what you want to do and how much you want to spend- all of my 14s wear usgi fiberglas stocks, and have harris bipods mounted to the stocks- i found that tightend my groups tremendously, as i could see mr flinch and correct that- it also saved a LOT of legwork-on the other hand, i also have a folder that i thought would be very "neat" = however, once mounted, i found it takes 2x time to deploy - push the button, swing the stock, lock the plate, and then it's ready- and that cold steel tube isn't fun to cozy up to as well-

I've heard there are good and bad Norinco receivers. Is this true? And if so what markings should I look for to determine if its a good receiver or not?

Also, what about the bolts being to soft? Is this a problem too?

Took my 2007 bolt to work and tested the lugs at 48 Rockwell, well within specs of GI bolts of 42 to 50 Rockwell. Bolt hardness does not seem to be an issue. Headspace is hit or miss but when we measured the headspace of over a dozen rifles at Hungry's clinic, none were out of Field spec

Hungry here: Aren't you glad as heck that you went all that way to the Calgary clinic? Now you can confirm and reassure others that their dicks ain't gonna fall off! :D

If I'm putting a new barrel on the receiver will head spaceing, or can it, be fixed or controlled?

What about bad Norinco receivers? I once was told there are good and bad ones.

I'm a neophyte to the Norinco world so bare with me as I ask these quesitons.

Thanks

Hungry here: Bad Norc receivers? None that I know of. The most recent batch from 2002 onwards are all fantastic. I currently have a 2007 stamped receiver, but I also like the 2009 stamped receivers. You really cannot go wrong Norinco M14's of late. Yes, once you screw on a match barrel, then you must (they come short chambered, or smaller than 1.630" headspace) have it installed by your gunsmith who while finish ream your chamber with you existing Norinco bolt to a nice tight 1.630" GO Gauged chamber. Bring on the questions because this forum is the most helpful (I like to brag , heh heh heh) bunch in the CGNutz community. ;)

Try to decide if you will be keeping the stock that comes with the gun. Personally, I'd try to buy the lowest price Chu stocked 2007 I could find and swap it over to a Boyd's laminate that I bedded it to.

Why a 2007? Does the year of manufacture matter form Nornico?

Hungry here: Nothing super special about the 2007 series, but they are marked so obviously. In the American M14 forums, many scary reports speak about the soft Norc metallurgy.... well they are correct about the 1990's Norc KRAP, but because of the Ass Wpns Ban of 1994??(not sure here), no more Norc goodies can enter the US of A. We win! We get all the Norc M14's. Many of us like the Chu wood, many of us hate them. All depends of what floats your boat. I'm a glass stock kinda guy, and slowly warming up to the plastic stocks found on the 2009 series Norc/Poly M14 rifles.

I had a couple of 2007 marked guns and they had very nice parkerizing and machining, but others are good too. The gun I've kept is an M305 from year unknown. Not as nice looking, but shoots well too.

hey... tx200:

Just realized that you are in the WPG area. I just did an M14 Clinic at Selkirk Fish and Game on 02 Aug 2010, this past summer. Bummer, ya shoulda been there! ;)

Cheers,
Barney

So I'm confused. I'm going to call Wolverine supplies this week to see if they have Norincos in stock. When I do, what should I ask them to identify on the receiver for me so I know I'm getting the right year or receiver?

To bad I missed you clinic.
