Carrying handguns at the Range?

For those that carry a handgun for work purposes;

Their rule is that the gun stays IN THE HOLSTER unless your life is in immediate danger.

It seems that they think the holster is the safest place for a gun. I think I agree.

It would probably be best it you called the ranges you are interested in and have them email the rules. To birds with one stone, you get your answer and you have it in writing.

I leave all my stuff on the bench, guns, mag and ammo. I never would wear a holster , i wanted some training first on how to draw from a holster safely, i may in the future wear my competition holster after i do the black badge course in Janurary. I never considered a nut comming up behind me or anything, they have to be a member just to get through the gate. I also thought your pistols had to be double locked once you left the pistol bays, i didnt think you could walk freely from one range to the other with a sidearm on. My understanding is no pistols period in the rifle range. However, thats just my two cents, i have never been told otherwise, i just go by the signs and the few rules ive read, anything im unsure of ill call Willy.

I've seen guys walking around the rifle range with holsters a few times. And have to admit when it's quiet we will go down to the 25 yd bench if I've want to let a newbie try out a mag or two in a pistol.

I've been told I need the black badge before I can wear a holster at the FMM range...never really confirmed that. Seems like every time Willy sets up a BB I can't make it...I was on call in the summer, Jan is my son's 1st birthday....the wife would not be impressed if I spent the weekend at the range.

I spend alot of time in Calgary, keep looking at the holster course at TSE to get me some basic safety, so far my "training" has been from fellow shooters with no formal trainings.

Same here. Ill be doing the one in January, cause i have missed a few as well. I doubt ill ever need to go to the rifle range with a handgun in a holster, when i leave the pistol range i box everything up and take a rifle out if im going to the rifle range. With the sound of gun fire i doubt any bear would venture near. I did read on the website that they were going to be getting metal targets all the way out to 1000meters so you could here your shot instead of having to walk out to the next zip code to check.

I just renewed at my range and holsters are only allowed at the pistol range, you are not allowed to walk from one to the other carrying a sidearm.

Holstered guns and range rules

That is an IPSC rule. IDPA Sanctioned Matches are by rule all cold ranges. Some clubs in the US run hot club matches. We don't up here. Few do in the US,

Take Care

B o B,

Not everything is IDPA so please restrain yourself from making every comment on here about that please.

The "new RSO" course that this member is talking about is the slippery slope that a few from the south part of the province think that they should promote and promote as the "new law/range rule". It has nothing to do with any sport.

Still waiting for the proof of where it is "law" as some people in the first page have pointed out! Waiting, waiting, waiting....

When we were at Silverdale seemed it was OK at the Action Range, is that correct?

I think even that requires a "holster course" of some kind....:yingyang:...and past that  , there's a restriction as to what type of holster may be worn  , even having completed the course(s) that qualify ?.....

There is a condition on your ATT that states:

"Firearms may only be loaded and/or carried on your person while you are actively engaged in target practice or a target shooting competition."
I believe that some CFO's have said that means you cannot legally walk around the range with a holstered pistol unless you are actually on the line with a loaded gun, about to shoot. Of course, we all know how trustworthy our CFO's are and how they would never make up policy and treat it as law.:jerkit:

Anyway, I think that is the portion that was being referenced way back in post #12 by Slavex.

I have to say that this subject always seems to get people twisted up every time it comes up. I find it interesting that gun owners cannot seem to agree on what a safe practice is and how many assume a holstered pistol is:

1) an accident waiting to happen, and
2) totally unneccessary on a green range

Mark

Again, specifically the law please.

As well, I am actively walking down the range to change the targets I just shot at. I am not going to chop some wood, change a tire etc...

I am engaging in all aspects at that time of target shooting.

Seriously, what the CFO claims is law is generally not and what most members here claim is law isn't either.

Are you kidding me?! You really read that far into that useless piece of paper called an ATT? You're at the range, leave it hot and carry it. After all I thought we treated all firearms as if they are loaded AT ALL TIMES. And something about not pointing a firearm at anything you don't intend to destroy. And something about keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you've made the CONSCIOUS decision to fire. And be sure of whats before and after your target(foreground and background).

Maybe its just me but these four rules seem to work whenever there are guns in play. They also seem to work with all guns whether they are loaded or not. Just saying....:bangHead:

I actually think there's a word missing from Slavex's post. I believe he meant to say there are NO laws on this.

We shoot together regularly and the only time I'm not carrying a loaded gun in my holster is when I'm shooting it. If he had a problem with that I think i would have noticed by now.

I missed that - what are you refering to? The TSE course, Black Badge, something else?

Carrying is really up to the range rules and the RSO. In our holster nights, we walk around the range with unloaded, holstered sidearms when not on the firing line. Most clubs I have been to do this as well. As long as you are active on the range this isn't breaking any laws. You can't leave the range, goto the parking lots etc with your sidearm.

My holster is the safest place for it, as opposed to leaving it on the bench - whether loaded or not. Make your own decisions.
