A Havelock man has been fined $700 for shooting a coyote on a road.

Robert Munro pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm in a right of way.

Court heard that on November 6, Munro shot a coyote on Glen Allen Road near Marmora.

A person had been jogging on the road just prior to the shooting. As a result of a complaint filed with the Ministry of Natural Resources, a conservation officer conducted an investigation.

Justice of the Peace Sam Cureatz heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Belleville, on December 21.

To report a natural resources violation, call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll-free any time or contact your local ministry officer during regular business hours.

He took the shot, and now he gets to pay for his mistake.I really have no issue with the fine if he was shooting down a roadway, and since he pled guilty,I can only assume that he was guilty.

If the guy shot the yote off the road, maybe he should be fined. I just find it odd that the fine is 7 bills when a lot of traffic fines are far less and pose a far greater danger to the public.

Glad to see the fine. As someone who has seen first hand as coyote hunters shoot from the road and trespass on posted private property, I'm always happy to see the MNR doing their jobs.....

"...should have stepped off the road..." 10 yards or metres off the road, as I recall. Mind you, if Wiley was on the road, the guy still would have been charged. No shooting across a road either.
"...find it odd that the fine is 7 bills..." Hunting reg violation fines are serious. The CO's have more authority than regular cops too. The guy could have had everything he had with him, vehicle included, confiscated. Have a look here. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/Enforcement/2ColumnSubPage/273460.html

What a dumbass....all he had to do was step off the road...lazyness!!

I am all for the blasting of yotes, but to shoot from the road is just retarded.

He should have run it over.

The coyote was likely in a field, but the shooter was on the road. Probably just driving along and hopped out to shoot it.

People shoot from sideroads quite frequently around here, mostly at grouse though. How many chickens can you buy for $700? :p

Have seen people shoot deer from a roadway also. Not smart.

The CO's have more authority than regular cops too.

I see phrases like this posted a lot.
FYI, in Ontario police have the same authority as a CO for the purposes of enforcing the fish and wildlife conservation act.

Incorrect - CO's can only enforce the associated provincial offenses they have been empowered to enforce, in addition to the criminal code (atleast a small portion of it), but primarily they deal with the related wildlife and fishing legislation.

Regular police officers can enforce any criminal or provincial offense in Ontario including those relating to wildlife, hunting, fishing, firearms etc. Think Highway Traffic Act, which is the most powerful piece of legislation out there, CO can not do that
