Ruger's new rifle...

if it came in lefty, i'd have one on the way to my gun room. nice lookin little rifle seams like somthing that would just work. No use for theflash hider tho..maybe slap on a break.

I think that something along the lines of a 1-4x scope mounted conventionally would actually be a more versatile setup than the scout-type scopes, given that charger loading isn't widely used.

-Faster into action at 1x
-More magnification for longer range shots
-No glare on the ocular lens when the sun is behind you

While the scout concept has merit as a sort of general purpose rifle, it has undoubtedly been superseded as a serious choice for a combat arm. WWII was the last gasp of the bolt action as an infantry rifle, save for sniping.

Agreed on the scope but most 1-4 power scopes are a little heavier than a simple IER or small red dot. This rifle is already 7 lbs. 7 lbs for me is not bad but Cooper envisioned something short, simple, and light.

The bolt action was not a serious contender as a battle rifle even while Jeff Cooper served. I can't see any sane Infantry leader advocating arming his troops with bolt actions over the Garand or M-14 Cooper would have served with. Specialist functions like sniper? Scout rifle is not a sniper or DM gun either. Not sure why this thread is in Battle rifles.

I still want one.

Im still new to this, but the more I hear about Cooper's ideal scout rifle, it starts to sound impossable....OR, everyone is impossable to please. Still like ruger's version of it. So what are we looking for hear? Full power round, light weight auto loading action with a conventional mount scope?

Your second idea sounds dead on:p

So wait, wouldn't the barrel be too short to make it a non-restrict? Or does that not matter because it's a bolt-action?

Barrel length only matters with centrefire semi autos in determining if it's restricted or non. If it's centrefire and not semi auto, or if it's a rimfire, it only has to meet a minimum overall length of 26 inches.

Your dreaming. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=361834&highlight=m14+weight

If so I'm living my dream! :D :p I just stepped on my scale with rifle slung on my shoulder, then subtracted the reading after I stepped on the same scale again without the rifle. 8lbs... still (and I left the trigger lock on)!

I haven't seen a main battle rifle with a bolt action since the Korean war. Just seems like the wrong forum for a scout rifle.

I agree that this rifle should not be here (not an MBR), but (big BUT) this forum is a very friendly place (read: helpful) and very open because I've seen all kinds of folks offer great advice to posts re: milsurp, reloading, family(ies). It's a great community within the CGNutz community! :D

And community building is what we do....

All of you folks are great! w:h:

Cheers,
Barney

Pretty cool. I would definitely consider picking one of these up!! After I finish my little project and get a few other goodies that have been on the back burner for too long.....

I would make a nice hunting rifle.
I can see the visual attraction for some to a rifle like this, but what advantage does it offer for real life hunting over a Ruger Hawkeye in 308?

I can think of a few disadvantages.

1. Mag makes one handed carry impossible.
2. More expensive.
3. Scout configuration with scope would put the weight forward.
4. Laminated stocks are heavy.
6. How does the flash hider come into play for hunting?
7. Mag would be a pain in the butt while slung over shoulder. READ ... jabbing in the ribs.

A Leupold FX-II 2.5x28 IER scope weighs 7.5 oz. A VX-II 1-4x20mm weighs 9 oz, which is not that much heavier. Admittedly, most other 1-4 scopes aren't quite so light.

In Cooper's defence, his idea was that the rifle might be employed in a military context to arm scouts operating alone and normally avoiding enemy contact, rather than as a front-line battle rifle. That said, I concur that a self-loader would still be a better choice; a greater volume of fire might come in useful and the niche is too specialized to justify another weapon in the TO&E.

Awwww, be nice, least it's not painted black!

Maybe it will come with a tacticool slingshot.. with a laser sight and foregrip, and the obligatory flashlight mount. Fed by exploding ball ammo of cours, plus a tracer round or two.. lol

I like Ruger, but this rifle is... mmm, uninspiring. I don't think there is much this rig you couldn't do with your cheap modded Enfield, all with a price tag under $300. :)
