Ruger's new rifle...

I was being nice. :D

Just asking practical questions about this rifle's usefulness as a hunting rifle as compared to other Rugers.

.

I know, all your points are good ones too. :D I'd toss in a 5 round mag for hunting, or a flush mount 3 if such a thing existed. But for 3 gun shooting or just plinking, the 10 would be fun. I think most in the battle rifle forum look at it more as a modern cheaper to shoot Lee #5. Well thats how i look at it. I'm thrilled anytime a major builder makes something that has a stock that might fit me without resorting to a bandsaw.

So together, what does your scope, rings and mount weigh? What scope, rings and mount are you using?

Scope is a Leupold Vari-x Compact 2-7x. Not sure of the objective size as it's not marked and I got it used, but I would estimate 28mm to 32mm. Not sure what kind of rings. They were already on the rifle when I got it used, but I'm considering changing them out for lower ones. Mount is a UTG 3 point picatinny with see through channel (for iron sight use). I've never weighed just the scope, rings, and mount, but estimate them at 1 to 1.5lbs.

If it took M14 magazines it would be a bowl of peaches...

+1 on that! Better yet, a 20 round M14 compatible magazine that is marked for Ruger Scout bolt action rifle. ;)

"...under $1000 like the sug. retail says..." That'd be $995US for a gussied up 16.5" barreled, .308 only, M77. Yet another rendition of Cooper's most stupid idea.

Which would make it virtually impossible for your M14 to weigh in at 8lbs even with the rubber butt pad mod.... I think your method of weighing the rifle by stepping on a bathroom type scale then subtracting the weight without the rifle is suspect. I think if you weighed just the rifle along with all the accessories and an empty magazine on an accurate scale it would put you in the 91/2 lb range - which is quite average for a scoped M14.

$1000 for a short barreled Ruger bolt action, with a flash-hider, a single stack mag (ewww), and military style sights? No thanks.

Maybe for half that price, but definitely not for a cool grand. So many better rifles can be had or built with that kind of cash.

Weighed it your way... directly on the scale. 7.75lbs. By using differential in weight, fixed errors are cancelled out. It provides a closer true weight than directly on the scale. Now even IF, and that would be a big if, the rifle weighs 9.5lbs as you have guessed, my point is still correct. That is the Ruger Scout rifle at 7lbs (w ww.ruger.com/products/gunsiteScoutRifle/models.html) is not even close to half the weight of an M14. :)

So it has the same issues as an M-14 but at half the weight and the cost? (if you want a non chinese one) :p

You're saying this rifle weighs in at 4lbs? My M14S weighs 8lbs with scope and sling! :p :D

Ya no problem, I understand you have the lightest scoped M14 on the planet. She must be a keeper. w:h:

BTW if the Ruger weighs 7lbs without scope, it would be a lot more than half the weight of an M14 with full size scope (average 9½ lbs).

Put an identical scope on the Ruger and it would probably average 8 lbs to 8½ lbs, which would be only 1 - 1½ lbs lighter than the same scoped M14 at 9½ lbs.

It's a keeper, but I doubt it's the lightest in the world. Anybody could do the same mods I did and get the same weight. And I didn't chop the barrel, which could shave off more weight. That would then actually be a better comparison, as both guns would have short barrels.

Now you get it! This was my point back on post #35. :dancingbanana:

I like the look of it and I'm glad they're trying something a little different. Get it around $600-$700 in 223, 243, 308 and maybe even 358 and I think it would do better.

I think everyone is really upset that it doesn't have one of those big honking Mossberg muzzle brakes.
