I just got a Mosin Nagant 1891/30 (1943, barrel looks brand spanking new, it's like mirrors inside) and with it's 29" tube, I'd like to hand load a little bit as it came with dies and everything. I'll slug the bore to find out what's the best bullet to use as well.

Question is, what's a good slow burning powder for this long barrel? Gonna use 150gr to 180gr bullets, MAYBE 200ish bullets but not very often. Mostly 150 to 180.

I'm thinking of using H380. Seems to be a good powder, but the loading manuals show 26" test barrels. Any powders out there that would give me a few extra ft/s with the longer 1891/30 barrel?

This myth might never die.

Longer barrels do not "need" slower powders, nor is the reverse true. The powder that will give the highest MV with a particular bullet weight with a long barrel will do the same with a shorter barrel. Load manuals only provide barrel length as a guide to what to expect from your own gun, not because those loads are "tuned" to that barrel length.

H-380 is ok for medium weight bullets. Go to the "Hodgdon Relaoding Center" for many more loads.

I use IMR 4350 for 174 grain and 150 grain bullets in my x54. It is a nice forgiving powder that has very little changes in different temperatures.

I load for several milsurp calibers, & I use H4895 for all of them including the 7.62x54. Check your reloading manual for loads to suit your bullet weights.

Aren't the iron sights calibrated for a 147 grain bullet?

Otherwise, I'd try a 180 grain bullet in it. It seems to be the best weight in any type of Enfield I've shot in .303 British or .30-06.

That was with factory Federal ammo though, but it seemed to beat all other weights of bullets for accuracy......regardless of manufacturer.

Not sure, mine is a M44 though not this model.

I use 45.5gr of IMR4064 with a 180gr .303 british bullet, and have good success when used in my Polish M44. I find it easy on my Privi brass as well. For a plinking bullet, I use the .303 174gr frontier bullet from Marstar, 44gr of IMR4064, and accuracy is better than my 180 gr hunting bullets.

I load for an M39. Favorite is 180 grain 303 bullets and 50 grains of H4350. That is not a max load but it is where things seem to work best for both the rifle and myself. That load is right on with the sights at the 100 m. I can't tell you for sure if it would match the sights at 200 m as eyes start to fuzz up on me at that point anyway. I have also used Reloader 15 with 150 grain bullets, with good success and found loads that match up with the sights there too.
