Im honestly wondering if the .22 is a bit superfluous when it comes to East Coast hunting (not trapping). Sure you can use it for Rabbits and Grouse, but the traditional wisdom has always been to use a shotgun for such (a debate in and of itself).

If you go outside, unless you're in the Annapolis valley, you're going to be in thick bush.

Aside from plinking and pests, are there any major species for which the .22 is the best option? Or is it just a good tool for practicing and having a bit of fun?

I only use mine for fun. Didnt people use to shoot cats out of trees with them back when.

I have a .22WMR for controlling foxs and coyotes near the house.
Good 125 yard gun without freaking out the neighbours.
I have a .223 for when i go to hunt at more rural areas.
When i had beagles, i used .22LR because if i used a shotgun,
after the first shot, dogs were done.
Scared crappless.
if they are gun shy they wont want to get out of truck.
I spent my time training the dogs to track rabbits and grouse,
had no interest in spending alot more time trying to train them to be OK with
shotgun blast's.
The simple soulution was a .22LR
and yes they are fun and cheap to shoot for plinking and practice.

I love shooting rabbits on the run and grouse on the wing with a shotgun... nothing is more gratifying... However.. shooting northern grouse with a 22rf is also a great experience, not to mention sneaking up on a sleeping cottontail, in its form, and shooting it with a 22rf. Hunting is a great sport no matter how you do it.;)

A .22 is one of the three firearms everyone needs to complete a basic battery of hunting arms. (centrefire rifle and shotgun are the others) A .22 is versatility, economy, & fun. Targets, pests, and small game. What's not to like?
