M14 S Operating Rod/Bolt Issue???

A friend of mine recently purchaseda M14 S from Epps and after about 40 rounds of Federal 150 gr "blue box", the bolt roller jumped out of the track in the operating rod....

I haven't had a chance to have an in depth look at the issue.

Does anyone have an idea what would cause this and what the cure is?

Or should this rifle just be sent back to Epps and be exchanged for another one?

Tagged for interest.

I shot one that did that a few years back. It was an earlier pattern receiver with the operating rod take down notch in the middle of the guide rail, rather than at the end.

Curious to see if your friend's rifle is machined in the same way.

During firing or as he pulled the op rod back?

This happened to me but i put it down to me pulling the op rod to much, it only happened once, i got my m14 2-3 weeks back, so its new batch (i assume).

now put 200+ rounds and not happened again.

Try to wiggle the oprod guide. If it's too loose then that could be your colperate right there.
Look for this part attached to your rifle;

Assuming that the tab to rail fit is good, I would then check the alignment of the oprod guide. If the barrel is way out of index, it will also affect the oprod guide and oprod.
 
First thing is to check the op rod guide. If it is a sloppy fit, remove it, peen the barrel underneath it and re-install. Next "adjust" it using a dead blow hammer until the tip of the oprod contacts the gas piston fully AND the tab doesn't jump out of the track.

If the tab is undersized significantly you will need a new oprod.

Note: A little bit of wiggle is acceptable.
 
Thanks guys, I my buddy will probably bring it over tonight and we can have an in detail look at it. Hopefully this can be resolved without the hassle of mailing it back to the dealer....
 
Well I had a look at it last night. There is a slight issue with barrel indexing, it needs to be cranked in a touch.

The oprod guide is fastened tight to the barrel but there is also an minor issue with the alignment of the op-rod guide, and it is opposite to the barrel indexing issue...When the barrel is properly indexed it will cause the op-rod guide to be even further out of alignment. When we properly index the barrel we will address the guide misalingment so it won't have to be monkeyed with twice.

I think what happend was the op-rod got disengaged from its track when he chambered the first round from the mag coming off a locked open position.

This is the first M-14 I have seen the insides of and I am sure impressed with the
simplicity of it.

I think I know what my next purchase is gonna be.....

Sprint, to address your question about the takedown notch, it is a the rear not the mid-point.
 
Well the next trip to the range was a bit of a dissapointment... On the second mag the gas lock let go and the guts blew out... Upon further inspection it appears that the thread were way out of spec, and I assume it was the threads on the lock and not the barrel threads.

So the gun went back to Epps and they totally agree with my diagnosis and a new one is on its way.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue?
 
a gas assembly blowing off the barrel???
that is a first in my books.
would have LOVED to have some pics of this incident
 
Yeah it was a bit of a shocker, and sure made a weird noise... But no it did not come right off, thanks to the front sight/flashider. Probably woulda been a b$tch to find in the 4 feet of snow!
 
I don't recall what the serial number was off the top of my head, gun has since been shipped back to Epps and a new one is on the way. It was out of the current lot on their website M-14s (black synthetic stock with a bayonet lug).
