Who has the slimmer AFG2 and what is your feedback on it?

And to those who have the AFG1, is it seriously better than a stubby vertical grip?

NEWSFEED: Magpul AFG2 (Angled Fore-Grip)
The Gen. 2 Magpul Angled Fore-Grip (AFG2) is a rail-mounted forward grip/index point designed to improve weapon
ergonomics and increase shooter speed and efficiency. Unlike conventional vertical fore-grips, the AFG2 takes into
account natural body mechanics to provide a comfortable and stable user interface for precise weapon control and recoil
mitigation. The AFG2 maintains the same basic functionality as the original AFG1, but features improved compatibility
with a wide range of rail systems, accessories, mounts, and rail panels. Due to this capability overlap, production of the
AFG1 will be discontinued in late 2010. The AFG2 mounts to milspec M1913 Picatinny Rails. All mounting hardware
included.

Theory Based Products:
In contrast to traditional weapon accessories, Magpul Theory Based Products require a greater degree of instruction and
training to be properly utilized. Only with a clear understanding of the concepts that facilitated product development will
a shooter fully realize the benefits they provide. The Magpul products included in this category are the AFG, AFG2, BAD
Lever, MS2 Sling, and ASAP Plate.

Features Explained:

INTERCHANGEABLE INSERTS
Two interchangeable inserts allow
“A2” style finger bump or “A1” style
flat textured surface depending on
shooter preference.

ERGONOMICS
Taking into account natural body
mechanics, the shape and angle of the
AFG2 improve weapon control, help
mitigate recoil, and reduce shooter
fatigue.

IMPROVED ACCESSORY & MOUNT COMPATIBILITY
Gen. 2 AFG features a stream-lined
profile to allow greater compatibility
with various accessories, rail panels,
and mounting hardware. The overall
length has been reduced by .87" to
minimize footprint, bulk, and weight.

I believe it all comes down to personal preference. I have one installed onto my SR22 and the feel of it is a lot more pronounced than from the original. The angle of the palm grip is sharper and fits into my hand better than the AFG1. Smaller, sleeker and definetly my choice over a vertical grip.

What setup are you running?
I have the AFG2, but wouldn't mind the AFG1 to try too. It depends if you follow the Magpul dynamics theory or not, I like the dominate grip and it helps me naturally accomplish it I guess. In a sense i guess it is a an aide that helps you quickly get back to certain fundamentals, watch the videos first and if it peeks your interest then try it!

When I first put my 11.5" together I had a put a CAA foregrip on, but then switched to the Magpul grip...it is really comfortable to shoot. The CAA is fine, but your hand just seems to sit in a great position with the AVF1. I keep saying I will switch back at the next range visit, but never do.
That is my .02!
Cheers!

I have the AFG2, but don't have an AFG1 to compare it to. It seems comfortable, well made, and I like it.

I'm using an AFG1 on my SB AR. I found the VFG made my AR feel top heavy.
I'm keeping the AFG1 on until something new comes out worth trying.

AFG differences are just fat vs slim, so in essence big hands vs small hands.

As far as the theory goes, you have to buy into it to properly utilize the AFG, it is not a replacement for a vert grip. The AFG has to be installed at the far end of your rail, this gives you a stretched out grip and maximum control. It took some getting used to (breaking old habits) but I have bought into it. The dominant grip defiantly helps with overall control, follow up shots, muzzle rise etc. etc. Again it takes some practice and patience but it seems to be a winner, for me anyway...

I have vertical grips on my ARs and I grip it the same way with thumb on left side / over top rail.

AFG1 looks a bit bulky and I have medium size hands.

Other problem with it is it blocks the side rails covers so you have to expose them like in the pic above.

PS: I didn't read the press release, AFG1 is already discontinued.

I've handled one of these grips at the store...it feels nice, but I'm having a tough time imagining that it offers any benefit that they claim, like recoil reduction/control...can any of you explain how it's supposed to do that?

Having your arm extended outward and your hand over the centerline of the bore gives you a #### ton of more control, try it. Then talk...

I have the AFG1 and was suprised that a company like Magpul would screw up so badily by building an product that inhibited use of their other rail accessories by partially blocking the upper section of rail. The angle is nice otherwise. But it is what it is, you either like the angle or you dont.

My AFG1 didn't cause any isssues with my Troy side covers. Guess I was lucky;)

Depends on the rails and the rail covers. For example, the AFG1 won't fit on a SAN B&T quad rail. On the flip side, if you're not running a full rail panel the 'flare' on the AFG1 does offer a bit more protection for the rails. The forward grip component of the AFG1 and AFG2 is essentially unchanged, though.

What's interesting is that they did not keep the same angle for the version2. The new one may be slimmer and all the other bits but it also has a slightly sharper angle(maybe only 5-10 deg)

Am I crazy? Optically illusion?

Either way, should do the job....but I have no issues using vertical grips(choked up in the same manner) as well as handstops mounted in the reverse manner.

You're not crazy; the AFG2 has a much steeper angle at the rear; it's more like 20°, though - minimum (this is how they managed to save almost an inch in length while keeping the grip essentially the same). This shouldn't effect functionality in the least.

The angle that counts is unchanged. The angle where you place your hand is the same on both versions.

Like Blaxsun says....the angle on the rear is different.....makes it shorter...takes up les space on the rail.

Thanks for confirming.

Yes, the rear change is obvious. I wasn't sure about the actual front hand rest portion.

Yea I'm still not sold on the product... Magpul always come out with new stuff (They're like Apple of the gun world) and it's an endless chase.
