I am thinking of getting into some long range shooting but I need some more info before making the right choice on buying a good long range gun! I visited a good shop that I trust and he gave me some good questions to ask like, do i need a long or short barrel? bi-pod or bag? I am looking at a rem 700 VTR. I believe the range is no longer than 500 yrds. I believe that we might be advancing as we go.

The shorcomings will be more apparent from the fact that it is a factory barrel, not so much because it is a short or long factory barrel.

FYI, Consider either the Savage FTR rifle or the Remington 5R. Both are pretty good rifles for shooting long range. You cannot use a VTR in any sort of organized shooting because of its muzzle compensator.

You would be ebtter off buying a used target rifle with a quality barrel - typically 28 to 30". This gets lots of velocity.

the single shot action will have a lot more bedding room on the bottom of the action, an good adjustable trigger and a stiff action.

Is this just fun shooting or competition? If for competition it would be well worth your while to check out all the rules and regulations first. They can be as restrictive as to what cartridge you can use.

Getting Started in Long Range Shooting

If just for fun, then none of this really matters. To answer your question, a 30" barrel is often used to maximize velocity. I would not go less than 26". If you want a factory gun, I would suggest you look at the various Target and LRPV offerings of Savage. They are likely to get you the most accuracy bang for the buck, especially at the longer distance.

I didn't say "open sights", I said "Iron Sights". Maybe you should read up on Target Rifle Competitions, Palma shooting, ISSF 300m etc boss:rolleyes:

Palma shooting is @ 1000yard with Iron sights? wow.

I am familiar with ISSF @ 300m using peep sights.

Being the internet if your gona say you shoot 1000 with Iron sights your gona need to back it up with video.

Theres is absolutely no reason to go any longer then 20" for .308, fact.

Yes there is. its called velocity and it makes a difference. Fact.

I want to add to this and say, You can hit 1000+ with a 20" barrel like on the 700p. But when your going that far, its more accurate with a 24" + when it comes to factory guns. ie. the 700 5R

And it would most likely be even more magical with a longer barrel.Perhaps you might not notice it accuracy wise(highly doubtfull) but you definately will notice that your shorty barrel needs both more elevation and windage to get the same job done that a longer barrel will do with less.Fact.;)

Palma is 800, 900 and 1000 yards. Or 700, 800 and 900m. Being as it is the internet you should be able to find my scores on the ORA website, DCRA website and maybe some on the NRA UK website;)

I don't follow precision shooting too much, but even I knew they shoot Palma with irons...:p

A common question asked by Palma rookies is: "Can I use a scope if I'm shooting in the Palma Rifle category of an Any-Sight match?" No, once you put a scope on it, it's no longer a Palma Rifle. You can still shoot in the Any-Sight match, but you're now shooting against all the unrestricted cartridge rifles, bad idea. Just remember, Palma = metallic sights.

The Course of Fire for Palma Matches

This is the simple part. The Palma match consists of 15 shots at each of three distances: 800 yards, 900 yards, and 1000 yards. You'll have unlimited sighting shots at 800 yards and 2 sighters at 900 and 1000 yards.

Can't think of a good reason NOT to go with a 24 or 26" barrel...Higher velocity won't hurt your game...

Wrong! The differences in velocities are irrelevant.

Whatever floats yer boat... So you must be some kind of god to shoot at 1000 with no optics hey?
