Ok.......so I may have a problem

ok fog, i have 2 motors and speed controls, plus a gutter tread mill here. If i supply motor and bearings, you make me a fogducker special and you can keep the other two motor set ups. (got to much crap in too small a basement
 
actually now that i think about it, i have a freq drive that you can feed 220 and get jackass 3 phase out of laying around somewhere, good for a couple of horse i think.....off to root.........
 
I can relate to Storm, ....the 5 gallon buckets are just an expansion from the coffee cans, but take up more room! This is a disease that can progress when you realize that you have to cast in order to fill all that brass, .........you start by picking up wheelweights in the parking lot and end up building storage for 40 tons of lead!!! ...........It finally dawns on you that there's a problem when you have to move!!

I will say amen brother. I am the same way with lead. Getting the house ready for sale to move to a bigger home and it finally dawned on me I should kind of clean out the other shed in the back yard. My goodness I have 4 tons of lead in there, thought I only had 2.5 tons but I didn't count the 25 lb lead bricks behind the second shed that I totally forgot about. Plus I still have about 600 lbs in the garage I still need to render.

Started off 30 years ago buying a single Lyman mold and now I have up wards of 130 different molds according to my excel spreadsheet.

I don't want to even talk about brass, lol.

I have about 10000 rounds of 38 spl and barely shoot it. Thousands of rounds of misc rifle brass that I don't even (or barely ever) shoot. I am also a brass whore too though as I've been bringing home pocketfulls of misc stuff after every range trip. Came home tonight with about 150 rounds of 9mm and I don't even bother reloading them.....

I know the feeling brother. If someone is dumb enough to throw away good brass, I will be smart enough to keep it. I once was throwing out my .22 brass into the brass bin at our outdoor range and there in the bottom of the barrel was two boxes of .375 H&H. Did some nice trading for some reloading components for them.
 
I've just started reloading .45 less than a month ago. I think I've acquired more than 1500 brass in .45 and probably another 1000 in other calibers. My brother laughed when I showed him the 38 special, as he knows I have no plans for a wheelgun even in the long future. :)
 
Ok so I can keep the 1hp 3phase motor if I want. Want would I need to run that off of 110/220? It would be handy to keep this motor as the mount is already there.

Unless your motor has some specialty flange mount, frame sizes for motors are fairly standard. You may be better off contacting a motor suppier with the nameplate data of your current motor and see what they can do for you. A 3PH motor of a given HP is somewhat smaller than a 1PH though. For a brass tumbler you likely don't need the full 1HP.

For some reason I thought, from reading the above, that the guts from a treadmill may be of assistance to me in providing a phase converter/controller for the motor. We just bought 3 VFDs for the club $9,000 for them. certainly not looking to spend anything even 1% of that, may as well just buy a new motor.
as for the mounting, it's an oooooooolllllldddddd motor, and I'm told the bolt pattern on it is not current standard (again going off the electrician at work).
just to give you an idea of scale, the opening is about 16 inches in diameter, maybe bigger. I figure at least a 5 gallon pail of 9mm in there if not twice as much. Once I get this thing home, I'm going to run it with about 4000 crap casings in it to clean it up. probably throw some old media in to, just to keep the noise down. Might need to play with speeds, as it's super low RPM right now.

I bought a brand new Baldor 1/2HP 120v 1phase motor through rae-side for just under $200 for my lathe a couple years back.

What size motors are you running at the club? I didn't see the invoices but apparently the VFD that drives our main gate, which is 1hp I think, was around $200-$300 but don't quote me on that.
 
two 7.5 HP and one 15 HP if I remember correctly, or it might be two 15s and one 30. I'm not sure.

Yeah I think that's why, I've heard that small VFD's are pretty cost effective, especially in relation to reducing startup amperage. A 7.5hp 3phase air compressor can draw up to 130amps @ 220 volts using a conventional starter, but will run about 20-25amps while working. Those numbers could be off a bit, the last time I looked at my amp clamp was 5 years ago, and I'm no electrician.

A quick look at ebay puts 1hp VFD's in the $125-$500 area.

It doesn't look that old, I'm sure the pattern is standard. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like it sits on a plate on the frame? You could always drill new mounting holes if you had to.

I bet the speed is just fine on that thing as it is.:)
