Norinco 780 Homeland Security - Pics Up - Lipstick on a Pig...

Well we just got finished messing around with some part swapping on the 870 and the 780. Side saddle lined up perfecty but it was a bit long (6 round) so the forearm was blocked from fully cycling the action. Speed feed forarm worked, as did the pistol grip stock, however the mounting bolt is of a different thread pattern. Extended safety will work but a bit of the trigger housing will need to be milled out to allow the oversize end to fit properly.
The barrel fit the 870 but the mounting lug I was too far forward to secure it to the gun.

I'm quite happy about the parts being so close and should have this little fella together in no time.

Pics to follow when I get home to a camera and a computer.

-- Thanks for this info, stormtrooper, --- as you said and sgt.rock before, it is what it is, and for what I payed for it , I like it , especially after putting a S&J mag follower in it, a real must as far as I,m concerned, I,m sure I,ll never get Bored with it !! -------- and if I do , I,ve got a lot more shot guns, including a Grizzly 12.5 , to fall back on. I just thing I,ve Finally found my , I don,t give a F**k what happens to it, Truck Gun !! ---- We,ll see what happens !! ;)

Please watch the ledge that the pump rails slide along! Many have found it bent out of the box, in my case it was straight however after 80 or so shells through it that rail is bent downward severely and is actually seperating from the reciever. I believe with more use that piece could break off of the reciever entirely, and I doubt the results would be pretty. Just something to be aware of, make sure you pay attention to the condition of your 780's internals.

Had some time to clean and get on the mill and lathe...

I had a spare couple hours today to clean out the rest of the cosmoline'esque lubricant that came wadded in the 780...

Here's a pic prior to the surgery and no, the dremel isn't part of my milling machine (that was before...;))

I turned down a follower that I had kicking around, and milled a couple slots into it to pass through the detents of the magazine tube. Superior to what I think used to be an old bottle cap, or as Norinco thought, was an appropriate follower...

I had a Vang Comp monster bulbous extended safety, but it was too large for the 780 trigger group, so I milled the area a little larger, and voila - mucho biggo safety! Big for the go, and tiny for the no :D

Installed a SpeedFeed pistol grip stock and Tac Star side saddle. The saddle didn't allow the factory forend to cycle far enough back to engage the shell lifter, so I milled a small contour into it to provide the necessary clearance. As well, the stock needed a little machined off the end where it engaged the receiver. The 780 didn't come with that small metal stock spacer you see on the Remington 870's. Lastly, the mounting rod was not the right thread, and it was a little larger than the factory metric one. Back to the lathe, to turn off the old threading, and re-cut it to M.6x1.

So far I'm into it for just the price of the gun... I've had a bunch of shotgun parts lying around collecting dust, and now they have a new home. I'm going to try to find one of my old sling mounts (the one that fits between the receiver and the stock). I had a few of them, but ended up giving them away to other GunNutz not thinking I'd ever need one again...I have a Wilderness single point sling - just nothing to mount it to at present :(...

As well, I might trim down the stock 1/2" to 3/4". I'm not what one would consider large framed (but I do have inner biggness!), and a shorter l.o.p. is preferred... That's one of the reasons I kept the factory forend as opposed to installing the Speed Feed one, as it buys me a couple extra inches, and lets me keep the elbow down...

Lastly, I gotta start digging around for some sights for the gun... I thought for sure I had an old set of Sage sights downstairs in a one of the "few" bins of gun parts, but alas, I've yet to find them...

Now to continue the quest for sling mounts and sights....:D

Looks great... especially at the price. I'm considering getting one myself, but I've gotta start restricting my purchases. Good job on it though.

Thanks for the ideas Stormtrooper,

I milled out my pump as well, so my tacstar 6rd fits in there perfectly. I'm going to replace the follower too.

I found lots of burs and sharp edges on the pump rails, so once I cleaned those up and slackened the incline on a couple of the ramps, it racks beautifully now. I spread the rails slightly when I put it back in, and that makes the pump nice and tight without the wobble.

Then I cleaned up and sharpened the extractor a tiny bit as well.

Little elbow grease and I'd say that's $119 well spent on a gun.

Yupper - I actually enjoy tinkering with these little diamonds in the rough... I took a small diamond file to the rough spots on the rails, then blued them to make em pretty again.... I still have more little tweaks to do, but I'm looking forward to the work...

I just got one of these myself and i plan to disassemble it and clean it all up good....looks like a sturdy little gun although i have heard bad reviews on it, i will have to wait and see.Where would i be able to get a decent follower for this gun i will do like you guys and change it out.

All i can say is if you got one of these 780's double check the welding/brazing around the Magazine Tube... mine broke off completely today while i was cycling it.

i dont know why everyone is saying you need to file the tacstar side saddle. mine functions fine without filing it?? also very nice touch with the speedfeed pistol grip... where in canada did you pick that up?
