9mm Crimp Question

Hey guys, quick question.. i just bought a whole Hornady LNL AP setup.. I bought the Hornady new dimension 3 die 9mm set. It comes with sizer die, seating die, and expander die.. Since the press only has 5 stations, and i bought an Powder Cop die do i need to get the powder insert/expander die all in one die so i can put a crimp die in the last station? In the hornady setup vids, it didn't have a crimp die on the last station, it had the bullet seating die, just wondering if i need to order another die.

Unless I'm missing something here, the bullet seating die also crimps, if set up properly, you don't need another die!
 
Some people choose to add a factory crimp die in that extra/last hole on their press. They use the seating die to seat the bullet to proper depth and then crimp on the last station. Nothing wrong with that. Personal preference.

Thanks guys for the responses. I guess I will have to use the seater die as the crimp die as I have something in all stations. 1-Deprime and size 2-Expand 3-Powder 4-RCBS Lockout 5-Seater Die. Thanks for all your guys help, nice to get things figured out before my stuff gets here. Now can anyone recommend some powder for 9mm and something for .223 that my AR will like? :)

Titegroup for 9mm - as 7.62 said, it meters well. It's also inexpensive, easy to find, relatively clean, and position-insensitive.

For 223, RL-15 is fine for some things (burns very cleanly, quite accurate) but not as good on a progressive (doesn't meter terribly well). Ball powders are your better choice for metering, some good ones are BL-C2 and WC735 (surplus powder). For accuracy, H322, a short-stick powder, meters quite well.

The not metering well thing is why I am switching away from it, thought it would be a good powder for both the .223 and .308, but it is not working out!

BL-C2 looks promising though! Is it difficult to find?

You may want to consider instead to use Hornady 044170 9mm/38 Cal Taper Crimp Die

Essentially the Seater/crimp die in the set is a roll crimp. (for revolver) and not a Taper Crimp (for straight wall like the 9mm or 45ACP etc.)

I would recommend the following order (YMMV FWIW etc ;) )

  1. Deprime / Size Die
  2. Powder Drop with PTX Expander**
  3. RCBS Lockout Die
  4. Bullet Seater die with the crimp portion backed off
  5. Hornady Taper Crimp die (or Lee FCD if you so choose)

** 290030 for Lead Cast or 290040 for Jacketed

As for Powder for 9mm - either Hodgdon HP-38 OR Winchester W231 are good choices for 9mm (bascially the exact same powder... Little dirty but excellent performance)
