Where to shoot 1000 yards near Edmonton?

1000 yard plus

Just some advice, and it would cost you as little as a bottle of rum or a case of beer for Farmer Bob. Ask for permission on private land.Farmers love free barley sandwiches and if you could wack some of his coyotes in process you now have a friend. Close the gates after you use them, dont shoot his cows or impregnate his daughter or wife and you have access to 1760 yards in most cases. One guy was kind of ify on letting me shoot on his property so I let him shoot my gun, when farmer bob knows you can hit something at 1000 yards he will have a new respect for you and your gun.

Human silhouettes are allowed, they just cant be designed to look like anyone other than a normal human outline.

I was gonna say... last time I was out there on my own (this was when I was working at Brinks and could grab one of the branch range passes for the day) I shot up a mess of B27s and IDPA targets. no one said a peep.

I think you'll find that most farmers or ranchers will not let you on their land to shoot. It's unfortunate but there is the issue of liability in the rare instance something goes wrong. I hate to be a Nazi (and I am not a legal authority on these matters) but the land owner must cover his/her behind as there is a lot at stake....especially in todays environment where everyone is trying to make a quick buck from someone else's misfortune. As a land owner myself I have no problems letting someone I know or some of my buddies that I can trust shoot on my property. A stranger on the other hand.....sorry but it's probably not going to happen.

The only exception to the "no human silhouette" rule is for uniformed Law Enforcement who have a written agreement with the club. During 2010. the only LE groups with agreements were EPS Partol, EPS Tactical, RCMP "K" Division ERT, and RCMP detachments from Leduc & Sherwood Park.
The "rules" are clear...posted on the website...and on the Rules Boards at each Range. In previous years, Alberta Sheriffs and Alberta Conservation Officers have booked time...but not in 2010. Private outfits like Brinks are not eligible to book as a LE group. Trust me...no human silhouettes permitted by regular members at SPFGA.

My orientation instructor seemed to point out how the rules tend to not be perfect, and mentioned that silhouettes were allowed, just cant look like anybody.



Show me where the rules say it?
Only thing i find is...
j) Only targets approved by SGGC and made of paper are allowed. Targets of plastic, rubber, metal, glass, wood, masonry or
other materials are expressly prohibited.

ahhh sneeky, i saw SP and my head went straight to stony plain/spruce grove, they might as well be one town.
LOL its also only 300 meter and i believe the range clean up is may or April.

My bad, im arguing over the color of apples while the other guy is talking about an orange.

Hey, what about if I come across your field without permission, with a couple buddies on snowmobiles? Is it OK to stop and have a drink by your 1200 yard target?
 
Hahaha.....well, if someone finds a chunk of metal sitting in a field with an big blazed orange dot painting on it....with splatter marks all over it....and can't figure out what it is....or if they figure out what it is but can't see where the shooter is.....then one should assume that it's not very safe place to stop and have that drink! Another option is to have another target in the opposite direction....fire off a round (not that I'd be so careless to do such a thing;))....and then they'll figure out what that chunk of metal with the big orange circle painted on it is for....:D....:sniper:
 
When I organized shoots out to a mile, everyone I invited had to have a membership with a gunclub that carried insurance, preferably with NFA. If I were looking for a place to shoot now I would look for a pasture not a crop field to ask for permission to shoot in. Buy a county map and see if there is any houses down range, remember that 308 ricochet with still go 2 miles. I faced the direction of the range so the nearest house was 8 miles downrange. I used steel targets that's why the template distance. I don't know if I will ever set anything up to the extent I had in Viking, but you never know. Have fun.
Don't hold a shoot the same day as a snowmoble rally either. 300 machines cut right across the 1500 yard range! Make for and interesting day when they stop to check out the targets.
 
So bad news for those long range shooters belong to CHAS.
600m,700m range will be gone for sure. 400m and 500m range "maybe" when and if the long range reopen this spring.
I got this info from one of the executives.
 
Closer and cleaner and board members who give out memberships when people pay for them.

Chas had one thing going for it and that's now gone. long range.

I heard different from one of the execs about a week ago. I guess we'll see in the spring. - dan
