Well done on the donation !! Its nice to see companies doing things like that...only Darn it ..I am going to the Hungrys clinic next week in Barrie :( I wasnt planning on buying one but now that a portion of the sale goes to a great cause you can count me in as well for one ...Good luck with your new products...keep em coming...w:h:

I do my best to keep my rifle nice and clean, but avoid lubricating the piston area. So because my rifle spends months at a time in the safe without getting used I'm guessing the humidity is causing the piston and cylender to rust.

Says the guy that doesn't like it and isn't going to buy one. NEA will have to find someone else to do the "sit in the safe for months and rust test".

I 'm looking forward to picking up a new M14 for a special project, and the thing preventing me from going ahead was the ability to drop the bolt quickly. This one is going to be a lot of fun.

FWIW, even with the best bolt release, you will need to carefully test and select your magazines. Not all mag followers have the right geometry to work well with a bolt release. 3 out of my 4 chinese 5/20's work well with the SEI unit, one if iffy. Several of my buddy's mags don't work at all as the follower slips past the bolt holdopen pretty often.

That's good to know.. is there anything that can be done to the contact surface of the bolt release to improve function? Maybe a slight internal extension to make up for the deviances in magazines.

I know when we were developing our bolt release for the VZ 58 one of the problems was the mag followers in well used mags would lose contact and the bolt hold open would fail. We added material to the contact surface to take up the slack in these magazines. Sounds like something that could be applied to this as well.

On an M14 this would be very difficult as the length of the holdopen is limited by the safety bridge and the depth of the left bolt lug. You cold make a aftermarket holdopen maybe 20 thou longer than GI and it would still fit 99% of guns out there, but that's about it.

In fact, I recommended this to NEA when I heard they were making one based on my experience in using the SEI release on Chinese receivers, but I have no idea if they took my advice or not. Will have to wait and see when their product ships.

My understanding is the issue is NOT the M14 design, but rather the variability in Chinese mags. Lots of guys have stated that if you use GI mags the bolt releases work 100%. Not an issue state-side as most of their mags are GI new manufacture from Checkmate, but up here where most of the mags are Chinese... well...

This is not an issue with the stock release as it doesn't have to push the follower down and risk slipping off the tab, it only matters if you install a tactical bolt release AND use it to close the bolt on an EMPTY mag. When the mag is loaded, it also makes no difference. And frankly, when actively shooting, your mag is full. I only notice the issue when doing drills on an empty mag.

The problem might be in the chinese followers.

When I read your first post about the issue, I was trying to understand if you meant (as stated) on empty mags and of course you addressed it further down.

Is this therefore a moot point? It is not really part of the design criteria to work on empty mags.

That's good to know. As long as it works with my full AIA mags I'll be a happy camper.

Got my bolt release in the mail today.
It sort of reminded me of when Marstar would sell the old M14's that were covered in cosmo. It was a baggy filled with oil and a machined marvel. I will do a full range report for ya guy's on the weekend. As I have the SEI model to compare it to.
So far everything look's good except for the fact that this bolt release is blued instead of parkerized but hell for the price who care's. Although there is very little machining marks and it appears to be 1 soiled piece but only a through trip to the range with a couple of bandoleers' will truly be the true test of how it measures up.

If it's like their mag release, it's not blued or parked, it would be blackened stainless steel. NEA would have to comment if this one is chromoly or stainless?

Most likely it's black oxide, I would have to look at it. Which brings up my other point, what dealer actually has them in stock yet?

The production pcs will be delivered in manganese phosphate / parked.

The limited number that went out as samples for evaluation on function and not looks.

got mine yesterday..... THANX NEA ....... to be blunt....... I love it
it fit perfect, no binding on the chinese pin, spring fit perfect, machining detail is perfect all around, flawless on my sample. serrations are just right, no sharp edges and most of all..... the darn thing worked in several rifles i dropped it into and with every mag in my shooting bag. very positive bolt lockup with no slippage with any of my chinese mags when the mag was removed. And the profile of the wider tab is easy to find and manipulate and blends well with the receiver contours

Charles.... you have a winner :D
