I recently acquired a Puma model 92 in .454 Casull, and despite my initial apprehensions regarding a Brazilian-made rifle, it performs admirably. I replaced the stock rear sight with a Marlin semi-buckhorn and as is, with the irons, it shoots around an inch at 100 meters with Hornady 300 grn HP. Homeloads soon to follow.

I don't want to rain on your parade, and certainly don't want to dis members of your fledgling club, but the 45/70 club kinda has you covered. The 45/70 can be loaded down to Casull levels but not vice versa, and the use of .452" pistol bullets is a disadvantage when used on tough critters. The 135 year old 45/70 club also has things wrapped up as far as small leverguns go as well, so go ahead, start your club, the senior club will cover you!

I'm a member of both clubs there is a place for both in my life...

10 rounds of 405gr @ 1550fps goodness from my 20" barreled M92 in 454 Casull or 5 round of 550gr WLNGC's @ 1580fps in my 1895GS 45-70...

Carry one when I am in black bear country and the other when I am in grizzly country...

I call my M92 454 Casull my 45-70 lite...

:D

i have one ... what is not to love about it .

it weighs around 5 pounds , it's small compact and quick to point .
with a bit of polishing and trigger work it is one of the slickest lever actions i have every had in my hands .
it holds 10 rounds of 454 , 11 rounds of 45 colt .

anything chambered in 45-70 is slow heavy and clunky when compared to the rossi .

the 300 grain hornady's i use have been clocked in the 2200-2300 fps range .

the smaller sized case also lends it's self nicely for very very quiet reduced loads .

also look at the ammo it's self , 100 rounds of 454 or 45 colt take up hardly any room ...... compare that to 100 rounds of 45-70 .
100 rounds of 454 / 45 colt is roughly the size of 2 boxes of of 45-70 .

http://ww w.gunblast.com/Paco_Legacy_454.htm will give you some idea's for loading info and velocities .

there are 2 rifles i use for protection when i'm out in the bush working my placer claims , my rossi and a short barreled 303 lee enfield , because they are reliable and hold more than enough ammo , so i don't have to pack it seprately .

i also own a 45-70 ...... and it hasn't moved from it's spot in the safe in a long while .

They are fun. I only own the 45 colt now, but a light fast and fun gun always has a home. I have 2 45-70s and enjoy them lots. One of the 45-70s is a Ruger #3 and it is every bit as fat to handle as the Puma. I do not have to limit myself to only one gun, if you don't, try different calibers and keep what you like.

I have a .45-70 as well, and I do load em hot...But perhaps you missed the point of my post, I was merely asking who else has a firearm in this nifty pistol cartridge and who else enjoys shooting it.

The Rossi with it's short 92 action rendering the rifle a mere 5 lbs surely makes it a very interesting and capable "carry" rifle. I've been pondering getting one in .44 mag in the trapper version (even slightly lighter). It's great to hear that the quality and accuracy is up to snuff.

If I was looking at getting a 44mag lever rifle I'd get a Marlin 1894 or a Win 92 or a Browning Win 92...

Not saying there is anyting wrong with a Rossi/Puma just saying I'd get one of the others before I would get a Rossi/Puma...

Sure. Try and find a trapper version of any of these at around $500! They're about as easy to find as hen's teeth. There's a reason these Rossi's are starting to become quite popular.
