Im a newbie to the SL8 and have an issue with not being able to hold the bolt open, not after the last shot, just can't lock the bolt back.

I have read through the threads and found a comment about enabling "hold open" after the last shot, does this also affect the ability to lock the bolt open manually?

Thanks.

Im not quite sure what you are asking, but there is a small button (just in case you are not aware of it) in the trigger guard, pull the bolt back, depress the button, and your bolt should stay open. or you can insert an empty mag and pull the bolt back and it should stay open.

If that is not your problem, I would recommend taking a look at your trigger group to make sure all of the springs are properly placed. I would recommend sending a pm to CNADNSL8-5 if you still cannot figure this out or have any other problems.

I hope that helped,

J

fraidknot,

No problem, inside your trigger guard forward and to the top corner is a little black tab. Just pull the bolt back and push up on the tab and it will catch the bolt when you gently allow it forward.

Good guns, accurate. One of the most reliable gas / rifle systems in the world. The stock is not for everyone but I like it. I think those with really big hands don't care for the thumb hole.

Are you using the HK magwell or the AR magwell?

If you're using the AR magwell, your bolt-hold-open will be hit and miss depending on the mags, the weather, alignment of the planets, menstrual cycle of your neighbour's wife, and other factors.

If you are using the HK mags and the HK magwell, your mags should lock back all the time unless someone fiddled with the trigger group and switched that option off. Open your trigger group, and look at the bolt-hold-open. See that ugly silver snake's head pointing out of the top front of your lower (That's the bolt-hold-open)? Follow it down until it turns black, and on the left side you should see the end of a spring. Grey, long, possibly sharp, looks like a piece of wire. Make sure that that wire is to the right, snug as close as possible to the bolt-hold-open. Preferably at the average distance between two lovers. Push the bolt-hold-open up, with your finger from the bottom while observing from the top. The wire should clear the plastic shelf that is just to the left of the bolt-hold open.

If this is correct, then you have a different problem: The bolt back with enough force to clear the bolt-hold-open and allow it time to move up. Try different ammo and lube your carrier. If there is still a problem, your mag might have a weak spring. Pull the bolt back and push the bolt-hold-open up with your fingers. If it stays open, your mags are suspect. Clean your mags, get new ones, etc. to make them push up harder.

Let us know if you still have a problem.

Thanks for all the good tips

I'm using an HK magwell.

I definitely need to get that spring end on the right side, mine is set furthest for the centre, i.e., on the left side.

While I had the bolt out I noticed that the rearward motion of the bolt is somewhat inhibited (maybe 0.010") by the ends of the pin holding the ejector. Here's a picture of what it looks like. Is this normal, or should the pin be below the surface of the bolt?

Thanks again!

Yeah, the ejector does not really go into the carrier, so that is normal.

Try moving the spring end to the right, just use a fine screw driver or something. That should change the settings to your liking.

I had this problem with mine. As oenone has stated, try moving the end of the spring to the right. Here is a picture to help illustrate it. I just moved the end of the spring one thickness to the right, approximately where the red line is drawn.

Best of luck.

With all this great info and some quality photos, perhaps this should be added to the SL8 FAQ? Maybe CNADNSL8-5 will be kind enough to do so if Bandits you don't mind the use of your excellent picture.

I must confess that the picture is not mine originally, I just googled it, and photoshoped it to show where the spring goes. I did pull mine apart to take a picture but couldn't get a good angle for the picture. But if it helps, then please use it in the SL-8 thread for anyone else.
